Rye Neck Middle School
May 5, 2023 - Issue 15
Dear Rye Neck Families,
I hope this message finds you and your families well. As we approach the end of the school year, I wanted to remind you that the week of May 8th is Teacher Appreciation Week.
This is a special time for us to honor and recognize the hard work and dedication of our teachers. They have gone above and beyond to ensure that our students receive the best education possible, and we are incredibly grateful for their efforts.
If you would like to show your appreciation for your child's teacher, there are many ways to do so. A simple note or email expressing your gratitude can go a long way.
Thank you for your support in recognizing our amazing teachers, and for being such important partners in your child's education. We could not do it without you!
Best regards,
Dr. Dulce Barker

Spring Olympics
The Spring Middle School Olympics took place this afternoon. The event was a huge success, and the students had a fantastic time participating in various games.
I would like to take a moment to extend my sincerest gratitude to Ms. Lawlor and Ms. Toolan for organizing the events and making it such a memorable experience for the students as well as all the staff who helped make it a success. Their hard work and dedication made the Spring Middle School Olympics possible, and we are all incredibly grateful for everything they did.
One of the most inspiring things about the event was how enthusiastic the students were about supporting their teammates. It was truly heartwarming to see the camaraderie and sportsmanship on display.

Traffic and Parking Reminders
A reminder for parent, student, and staff drivers:
Our MS/HS parking lot, driveways, and Hornidge Rd. can become congested at times. Typical drivers may be in a hurry with other places to go, appointments to make, and get annoyed at others who either don’t pay attention or hinder progress. Please keep these tips in mind for everyone’s safety, particularly the children who may be less careful, less aware, or who exercise the degree of judgment that comes with their age level:
Avoid cutting people off-- it leads to rapid and poor decision making, and it can generate road rage.
Adhere to stop and speed limit signs, and give people using crosswalks the right of way.
Take turns at merges, stop signs, and intersections to give everyone a chance to enter and exit.
Drive slowly and defensively. The 10 mph campus speed limit is slow, but slow is better than unsafe.
Assume walkers and bikers are not paying attention to you. Although walkers and bikers should follow road rules, assume that they will not do the safe thing.
Be aware that there are other drivers in other cars: don’t block driving lanes or intersections, move for those exiting parking spots, and load/unload students quickly in designated areas.
Traffic in the “temporary” gravel parking lot on Hornidge is one-way. Students should not be dropped off in the lot. Additionally, pedestrian traffic is not permitted in this lot. You cannot walk through as a shortcut.
Tips to help students develop good study skills:
Note from the Nurse
- Students experiencing a fever must be fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of medicine before returning to school.
Message from Mr. Ceglia, Athletic Director: Sportsmanship
As our modified athletic contests are starting for 7th and 8th graders, it's important to remember sportsmanship. It's wonderful to have excited fans and families in the bleachers! Please remember to cheer positively for our athletes, coaches and teams and refrain from saying anything negative toward officials, opponents or visiting teams. Individuals or groups who are not able to demonstrate appropriate behavior will be asked to leave the event. Let's share in the goal of creating an environment that is welcoming, energizing and educational. Go Rye Neck!!

7th Grade Art - Ms. Appel
8th Grade English - Ms. Toolan & Ms. Addorisio
The eighth grade classes will study William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The students will study Shakespeare’s life and the Globe Theater to better understand his craft and purpose. Most of the reading of the play will be done as a class which will allow for a variety of opportunities to experience both its depth and entertainment value. Near the end of the month, the students will begin reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak, a young adult novel whose female protagonist starts high school dealing with the aftermath of calling the police to an end-of-the-summer party. She struggles to find her voice while trying to come to terms with what happened. The novel addresses many topics the 8th graders will deal with as they transition into high school. Please note, the novel deals with mature themes that you may wish to discuss further with your child.
Also, this quarter’s independent reading will offer a variety of book choices written with diversity and inclusivity in mind. If you think you might have any concerns, the list is attached below. Feel free to preview books to help guide your child’s book choice:
