What is a Physical Property?
What are some examples of a physical property?
Now think about it yourself. What do these eight examples have in common?
- They all describe an object. That is what a physical property is!
Now what is something that would not be able to fit into the category of a physical property?
- The ability of paper to burn
Why is this not a physical property?
Because it does not describing a physical feature.
Now look at the picture in the top right corner. That picture helps me remember what a physical property is. Why? Because there are so many words that you can use to describe the object. Such as, colorful.
What is a chemical property?
Definition- A characteristic that is observed when a substance interacts with another substance.
What are some chemical properties?
- the ability to rust
- the ability to tarnish
- the ability to burn
Now think about something that would not be able to fit into the category of a chemical property?
If you thought about the ability to melt, then you are right.
Why is that not a chemical property?
Well, think about it this way-
What will happen if you leave a ice cube out in the sun? Well, the cube would melt. Even if the cube melts, it is still a form of water. Even when frozen it is a form of water. So this means that only by appearance ice cube changed. That is why it is not a physical property.
Now look at the picture below.

- chopping wood
- molding clay
- a glass vase shattering
Now think about something that would not be able to fit into the category of a Physical change.
- A bomb bursting would be a chemical change, because of the property of combustion.

Now what is something that woulda not fit into the category of a chemical change?
- boiling water
