Summerhill's Scoop
The Starfish
The Starfish Story A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”

Mielinski's Message: Assessments
Before you assess:
- All CFA and Unit Assessments must be put in to AWARE.
- Department Leads: Please turn in an answer key (including the standard) to me several days in advance of the assessment. Include the date that you plan on assessing so I know when you will need answer docs.
After you assess:
- Turn answer docs in at the end of each class period. You can have a student deliver them to the office. You may turn in answer docs from make-up test or extended time testers on whatever day they complete the test.
- Indicate on a post-it note how many answer docs you are turning in per class period.
- Once answer docs are run, check AWARE to ensure that all student scores have been loaded.
- I will return the answer docs to your mailbox. Keep these handy in case any student scores did not load and need to be rerun.
