bullying prevention by Ainsley Carver
Bullying can have many effects on someone's character or personality. Some common effects are depression, anxiety, health concerns, decreased academic achievement. An extremely low amount of bullied children can even retaliate in the ways of hurting others. In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied. Kids who bully others can also have negative affects come out of the situation. This can be early on drug/alcohol use, getting into fights, vandalizing property, dropping out of school, having a criminal background at a young age, or providing physical abuse to loved ones. Even those who witness bullying can gather negative effects from the situation. This includes skipping school, early on drug/alcohol abuse, depression, and anxiety.
The website "stopbullying.gov" has much more information on this topic for you to read about if you're interested in learning more about bullying.
The History of Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character, mascot, and icon to many around the globe. He classically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves. He has a pet dog named Pluto and is married to Minnie Mouse. His friends include Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Chip’n’Dale, and many more. He has one son, Marcus Mouse, and two daughters, Millie, and Melody Mouse. He features in movies, shows, comics, books, and more.
Mickey Mouse was created on November 18th, 1928 by Walter Disney. Mickey is also the mascot for Disney World, Disney Land, Animal Kingdom, and The Walt Disney Company. He was created as a replacement for an old Disney character, “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit”. Mickey first appeared in the short “Plane Crazy”, debuting to public in the short film “Steamboat Willie”, which was one of the first sound cartoons. He went on to appear in over 130 films in the following 22 years. Those films include “The Band Concert” (1935), “Brave Little Tailor” (1938), and Fantasia (1940). Ten of Mickey’s cartoons were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, one of the short films being “Lend a Paw”, won in 1941. In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Beginning in 1930, Mickey has also featured in comic strips and comic books. The “Mickey Mouse” comic strip, drawn originally by Floyd Gottfredson, ran for 45 years. He has also appeared in comic books such as “Disney Italy’s Topolino”, “MM – Mickey Mouse mystery Magazine”, and “Wizards of Mickey”. He features in television series such as “The Mickey Mouse Club” (1955-1966, now being Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) and many more. He also appears in other medias such as video games, merchandising, and is a character at Disney World, Disney Land and Epcot, where you can meet him and take plenty of pictures. He generally appears with his wife Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, and his best friends Goofy and Donald Duck, along with his nemesis Pete. Thought initially characterized as a sassy lovable rouge, Mickey was rebranded over time as a nice guy, usually seen as an honest and bodacious hero. In 2009, Disney began to rebrand him again by putting less importance on his friendly, well-meaning persona and reintroducing the more adventurous and stubborn side of his personality, showcasing in the video game “Epic Mickey”.

Women's Rock Day
Women Rock! Day is celebrated on January 3 every year. It is a day to specially honor the many brilliant women who contributed to the rock genre and caused giant waves in the world of music. These women paved the way for future generations by breaking into male-dominated spaces. On this day, we pay tribute to the many female musicians who were pioneers in their own right. From famous solo artists like Grace Slick and Janis Joplin to female rock bands like The Runaways, who helped set the stage for female artists to perform freely, many women have created a niche and assumed their rightful position within the mainstream rock scene. Pat Benatar was one of the first women to contribute to the genre of hard rock. In 1979, she released her first album titled “In the Heat of the Night,” which shot her to instant fame. Her subsequent albums solidified her position as one of the most famous rock acts, and she became one of the first and most frequently played artists on MTV in 1981. Around the same time, Chrissie Hynde, after many unsuccessful attempts to get her name out there, was chosen by a record label owner based on her demo tape. The label put her in a band with a few others, and they became known as ‘The Pretenders.’ Their self-titled debut album was released in 1979, and the band became one of the forerunners of the ‘80s New Wave movement. On January 3, 1987, Aretha Franklin, famously called the queen of soul, became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Women Rock! Day has been celebrated on every anniversary of this event since then. Tina Turner, whose career began in the mid-’50s, performed for more than half a century before retiring in 2009. She has sold more than 200 million records worldwide — one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. In the 1960s, Janis Joplin became one of the first female artists to overturn the ‘girl singer’ stereotype in folk and pop music. She fused rock and blues into her music and influenced many artists. Joplin’s career shot to success in 1967 when she performed with Big Brother and The Holding Company at the Monterey Pop Festival. Unfortunately, she passed away soon after. It isn’t possible to talk about rock music without mentioning Joan Jett. After breaking out of one of the first female rock bands in the ‘70s, The Runaways, Jett went on to have an even more successful career with her own band, The Blackhearts. They released their first album in 1981, titled “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and it became a super hit.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Every year, on the third Monday in January, we celebrate the great accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr during the civil rights movement. We even get to get out of school, which I’m sure everyone is excited about. But this national holiday wasn’t always there. It took years to become accepted by the whole United States and become a national holiday. MLK was a part of many movements during the civil rights movement, including the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. He even organized such marches like the March on Washington. But he is most famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech. The day he was assassinated was a day of sorrow all around the nation. Almost immediately after King’s death, there were calls for a national holiday in his honor. In 1970, many states used his birthday, January 15th, as a holiday, even though legislature for a federal holiday was introduced to Congress two years earlier in 1968. But this legislature had too much opposition on racial and political grounds, so it was denied. In 1983, it was finally passed, making the third Monday every January a national holiday. The day is celebrated with marches and parades celebrating King’s great achievements.

ALL ABOUT BETTY WHITE
Betty Marion White was an American actress and comedian. She was born on January 17, 1922, in Oak Park, Illinois. Most of us know her as the iconic grandma in quite a few movies and TV shows, such as The Lorax and Golden Girls. However, her very long acting career begun long before any of us were born, so there is a lot that most of us do not know about her. Unfortunately, she died on December 31, 2021, just weeks before her 100th birthday. Therefore, in honor of her memory, here are some interesting facts that you might not have known about Betty White.
Betty White’s acting career begun in the 1940s, when she started acting on various radio stations rather than on actual television. Some of these shows included Blondie, The Great Glidersleeve, and This Is Your FBI. She first appeared on TV in 1949 on Hollywood on Television, working as a “girl Friday”. However, her original rise to fame was momentarily interrupted when she served as a volunteer for the American Women’s Voluntary Service in World War II. After her death, the US Army lauded her for her service during the war. She created her own show, The Betty White Show, which first aired on September 12, 1977. However, the show was cancelled not even a year later due to a controversial topic at the time. Her show starred an African American tap dancer named Arthur Duncan. At the time, most people did not like the idea of an African American actor on her show, so they prompted her to fire him. However, she refused, which eventually lead to them cancelling her show. She was married three times: first to Dick Barker in 1945, but they divorced the same year. Two years later, she married Lane Allen, but she got divorced again two years later. Her final husband was Allen Ludden, and there is an interesting story behind how their relationship started. She first met Allen on the show Password, and later on when he proposed, she refused his proposal. However, he kept the ring on a necklace and stayed persistent until she finally agreed. They married in 1963 and stayed married until his death in 1981. Another interesting fact about Betty White is that she was the oldest person to ever host a Saturday Night Live, as well as the oldest person to ever win an Emmy (she has eight). Also, she holds the Guinness World Record for the actress with the longest television career, stretching for over eight decades. Unfortunately, her untimely death took the world with surprise as we were all expecting her to reach her 100th birthday only 17 days after her death. Her cause of death was a stroke she suffered from a couple days beforehand. She died silently in her sleep. We should all appreciate the things she contributed to our country and for the television industry. May she rest in peace.
