Endeavor Elementary School Newsletter - November 2017
Ms. Thistle's Thoughts
Hello,
We are moving right along into our winter months. Your kids are making great choices at school! They are being respectful, responsible and safe. Thank you, parents, for helping to reinforce safety in our school and participating in your child's education during our Parent-Teacher conferences. Teachers are making great connections with your child and together they are moving through our academic curriculum in a safe, nurturing environment.
Volunteers welcome: If you would like to come in and support our school regularly, please feel free to connect with me or fill out the Endeavor Volunteer form and return to our school by November 1st. There are a few areas where we could use extra support (practice identifying letters/numbers, listening to students reading or practice math skills.) Thanks for considering!
I wish you and your family a happy, healthy November. All the best to you!

Notes from the Office
We are looking for volunteers to help with Math and Reading support. IF you are interested or know of someone who has some extra time, please contact the office for a volunteer and background check form to fill out.
School Day--
Our doors OPEN at 7:50 am, and class BEGINS at 8:00 am.
Being on time, prepares you to do your BEST!
Reporting an Absence--
Please contact the office by 8:15 am if your child will be absent from school. If a phone call, phone message, or email is not received stating that your child is out by 8:15 am, safety calls will be made to insure that your child is safe. This is for the safety and well being of all students.
Parking--
Remember to please park in the parking stalls and not in the driveway. You may also park down at the Civic Center for drop offs and pick ups. The busses need to be able to get in and out of the driveway without driving on the curbs and grass. This is a safety precaution.
Changes--
If there is a change in your child's daily pick up routine, please send a note with them in their folder. i.e. doctor appointment, or grandparent picking up instead of riding bus home.

Nursing Notes with Ms. Hon
When your child is ill
Students have attendance expectations, but if your child is ill, please keep him or her home to rest. The Student Health Guidelines are published in the student handbook. Please review these for expectations of the district. The district medical advisor has participated in the development of the guidelines.
Students who present to the school office with symptoms during the school day will have these guidelines taken into consideration for the action plan. For example, a student who comes to the office complaining of not feeling well will be asked to identify what is not feeling well. Is it a headache, stomachache, fever, cough. Temperature checks are made frequently. Sometimes a few minutes of rest and a drink of water is all that is needed. But we will call you if your child meets a guideline and ask you to take action.
Please remember that students who need medication during the school day must have the medication delivered to the school office by an adult in the original pharmacy labeled container or original package with directions for over the counter meds, and one medication consent/request form per medication shall be completed and submitted to the office for the nurse to review before giving. Medication forms are online for your convenience. Go to Nursing Services, Medication.
Ask the pharmacist to provide a second bottle for school when ordering or picking up the medication from the pharmacy.
The school nurse is available to you as a resource, please do not hesitate to call for support and guidance. Mrs. Hon covers all elementary buildings and may be reached at 608/742-4867, ext 4131, 608/697-4912, or honv@portage.k12.wi.us

Counselor's Corner with Ms. Brown
We all want our children to become successful adults. Teaching them to be more
independent is the beginning. Starting as young as preschool, our kids can begin
doing simple things by themselves. Tap the link below for an article that helps understand how to help build a child's sense of independence.

We will be starting Makerspace Mondays this month. "What is Makerspace?" you may be asking. Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build, and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering, and tinkering.
During the afternoon recess, students who have made great gains and had great attitudes from the previous week will be able to stay in and work in the Makerspace boxes, K'Nex, and the LEGO wall.

PULLIN’ for Pop Tabs at Woodridge Primary School!
We’re collecting Pop Tabs for Mercedes Alves, a 5 year old Woodridge Primary student. She is collecting tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in memory of her late brother and has been collecting since February 1st. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the record at 2,782,000 tabs collected in a year and has stood for 12 years. Mercedes has currently collected over 2,400,000 tabs and has until January 31st to beat that record. She is so close and we’re so excited for her! What’s even more exciting is that Mercedes would be the very first Portage resident in the World Record book!
If you’d like to help, please send your pop tabs to school by January 12th and we will send them to Mercedes’ family.
Let’s all help Mercedes beat that World Record in memory of her late brother and have his memory forever remembered in their hearts and the book!
