The Nine Years' War
Irish vs. Elizabethan!! Who won?
Introduction:
What were the causes?
What was happening?
The Nine Years' war fought between Ireland and England. For the Irish people, it was called the Nine Year War while England referred to it as Tyrone’s rebellion. Hugh O’Neill was given an education and military training by the English. Queen Elizabeth gave him the title of Earl of
Tyrone, but he faked his loyalty to England until about 1595. He then openly joined the rebellion and they were fighting against England for religious persecution and the colonization of the land.
What were the effects?
Neither side could be successful so by 1697 a stalemate was found. The war ended with the “treaty” Peace of Ryswick. .
This affected many Irish people because their protesting failed to succeed. These campaigns included the British naval attack on Plaisance (Placentia) in 1692, the French attacks on Ferryland, and St. John's in 1694 and D'Iberville's raid on the Avalon Peninsula in 1696.
