3rd Grade Update
This will be a busy yet quick week. We will be finishing up the first half of the year. I can't believe how quickly it has flown by. Be sure to check out the news below.
Just as an FYI, I will be away from school Friday from 8:45-10:45 in order to attend "The First Word" event at the middle school for my son. I know the students will do a great job while I am gone.

First in Math - Our class has earned 21,657 stickers!
When we reach 50,000, we will have a small class celebration. We have to work as a team to get there! Let's get back on playing First in Math.
Reading
We are currently reading aloud Rump - The True Story of Rumplestiltskin. This book is on the South Carolina Book award list. So far we are loving it!
Current Skill Focus - Asking who, what, where, and why while reading informational texts, and determining the text structure of informational texts
Writing - Goal Setting- We are working on writing goals and how we can work to accomplish them. The three areas of focus are academic, behavioral and person. Look for writing to come home Tuesday to help proofread.
Encourage your child to complete their independent reading each night.
Math
Our Chapter 5 test is Wednesday, January 13. The graphing homework sheets are very similar to some of the problems that will be on the assessment. I will plan to have a study session at 7 am Wednesday morning. Chapter 6 will focus on geometry.
Keep practicing multiplication facts so they become automatic. We will have a test to be graded on 0-8s on Thursday. This test will be timed but then students will have additional time to complete it and check over as needed.
Timed multiplication test focus: 7-8's
Next week: Review
South Carolina History
We talking about the Revolutionary War. Students should be able to tell why this war was important in our history and what the outcome was. We will also complete a newspaper that goes along with the lesson.
Science
We will begin our study of solids, liquids and gases. Students will be participating in a variety of learning experiences to build their understanding. This should be a fairly quick unit because it is a review of what was covered in 2nd grade.
Other Notes
Don't forget to check and sign your child's agenda each night. Encourage them to write neatly so you can read what they should be doing. Every child should be able to communicate what they are doing in class.
Purple folders come home on Wednesday. Please make sure you are reviewing the papers and signing the folder each week. The folders are due back to school by Friday.
