Penny Fleet Named Interim Superintendent
The Spring Hill ISD Board of Trustees recently named Penny Fleet Interim Superintendent. She previously served the district as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Special Programs.
“Ms. Fleet is more than qualified and will do a tremendous job,” said Board President Mark White. “Her experience is invaluable and she will prove to be a strong leader during this transition.”
Fleet has 37 years of service in education, which includes ten years teaching and coaching at Hallsville ISD, 12 years in administration at Pine Tree ISD, and 15 years at Spring Hill working in curriculum and special programs. She received her Bachelor of Science from Centenary College of Louisiana, and her Masters in Administrative Education and Superintendent Certification from Stephen F. Austin State University.
“I am honored to be serving as Interim Superintendent for the next few months,” Fleet said. “I will work very hard to support all staff and students during this extremely busy semester. Working together we will maintain a positive learning environment for all students and have a highly successful Spring 2021!”
Spring Hill Introduces STEAM Backpack Program
Spring Hill recently launched a new backpack program to promote science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) activities at its Primary and Intermediate campuses. As part of the program, students check out backpacks that include a book, STEAM activity, and an informational challenge card. Some of the activities include KEVA planks, car design kits, looms, Strawbees kits, and coding robots.
The STEAM backpacks are designed to encourage self-directed, future-ready learners to explore and investigate in any setting. “Our goal is to foster an excitement for learning in the students and inspire innovative thinking,” said Jayne Pleasant, librarian.
The program also includes a digital platform for students to share their creations and reflections with others. This digital platform is the beginning of an online STEAM community between the two campuses. “It is our hope that the STEAM backpack program will create collaboration and connections with family and friends,” said Michelle Malloy, instructional technologist.
The STEAM backpack program was funded by a Spring Hill PTA grant and is managed by Jayne Pleasant and Michelle Malloy.

School Counselors Celebrated During National School Counseling Week
February 1-5 is National School Counseling Week, a special week to honor school counselors and the contributions they make within our schools. School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents. They work in partnership with parents, teachers and other educators to ensure students realize their potential.
We at Spring Hill ISD express our appreciation to our counselors for the work they do and for the tremendous impact they have in helping students achieve school success. As an added thanks, SHISD counselors were treated with cupcakes.

Spring Hill Students Selected as Texas All-State Musicians
Members of the Spring Hill High School Band have earned the prestigious honor of being named Texas All-State Musicians. Haleigh Yoder and Jackson Massey were chosen for this impressive honor through a competitive process that began last fall and included District, Region, and Area levels. Haleigh plays baritone saxophone, and Jackson plays percussion. The Spring Hill Band is under the direction of Michael Moody.
Additionally, Thomas Pecot - trombone, and Chris Kendall - percussion were named Texas All-State Band alternates.
Despite the many challenges encountered this school year, these students remained committed to their personal musical development. Congratulations!
Students Participate In Kids Heart Challenge For The American Heart Association
Spring Hill Primary and Intermediate students are participating in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge program. Through this community service project, students raise money for the American Heart Association while learning how to develop heart-healthy habits like being physically active.
“We are learning more about our heart, body, exercising, and eating healthier,” said Intermediate teacher Chris Peurifoy. “I challenge each of the students to talk to people about what we are doing and learning in PE class.”
Peurifoy has established rewards for fundraising levels, adding to the excitement of the program. ”If the students raise at least $30 they get to Super Soak one of the coaches, and if they raise $100 they get to slime us,” Peurifoy said.
Money raised helps fund community initiatives, heart disease education and research.
“This is our 21st year to participate in the program at the Primary,” said Primary teacher Julie Heflin. “Our goals this year are to make our hearts healthier and raise money to help fight heart disease.”

Teacher Applauds Kindness of Students
Junior High Teacher Melissa Haney recognizes two eighth grade students for their act of kindness. Melissa had this to say: "In today’s world there just isn’t enough emphasis on kindness. After class one day, Gavin Higginbotham asked if he could help straighten up all the wires coming from my lap top, Elmo, and speakers. He said he could stay after one Friday and bring some zip ties and hide all the wires and make that look nice. So that Friday Gavin and his best friend, Hayden Austin, brought zip ties and they made my AV cart look fabulous! I just wanted to brag on these boys for having the NERVE TO SERVE! Thanks Gavin and Hayden, you made my day!"
100 Days of Learning
Spring Hill Primary celebrated the 100th day of school this week. Students were invited to dress up like they were 100 years old. They also celebrated by wearing decorated t-shirts. The 100th day of school celebration provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate major milestones in the academic achievement of students.
