Reading Workshop
What an exciting time we have been having in Reading Workshop! Before Thanksgiving, we read two exciting stories: Max's Words and What Illustrators Do. These stories allowed us to practice the skills of text and graphic features as well as sequence of events. Students enjoyed a scavenger hunt looking for titles, headings, captions, and photographs!
This week, students learned about a new word called SCHEMA. We talked about how we can make meaningful connections to the text based on who we are and our experiences. This is challenging at first, but students are really challenging themselves to make meaningful connections!
We also have been looking at answer questions based on videos that we watch!
Math Workshop
We are starting our next Unit of Everyday Math which will focus on addition, subtraction, what's my rule tables, estimating, graphs, and equivalent names for numbers. Our biggest focus this week has been explaining our work. This is a very important next step for third graders!
We have continued to use Xtra Math and are seeing great strides in our fact fluency!
Social Studies
We are just about to finish our unit focusing on Communities Around Us. We recently learned and read about students from Hungary, Paraguay, Australia, and Japan. We are looking forward to start our next unit on civics!
Science
Students have LOVED our culminating project for the planets! Students were tasked with researching a planet with a partner. With their information, they analyzed their details and found reasons why a human could not survive there. Using this information, students then created a creature with features that would help it survive! This was an exciting, imaginative, and productive project that really helped us work as a team! Wait until you see them at community meeting!!
