TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Jr. K and Kindergarten Blog March 4th-8th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
We are taking a scaffolding approach to learning about this month's artist Vincent Van Gogh. After introducing the famous artist last month we will continue our study this month. This week students engaged in using loose parts to create Starry Night masterpieces. We also used playdough to create Sunflowers and Starry Night. We have been working on recognizing and making swirls, circles, curves, waves, and lines to prepare for the next projects where we will paint Starry Night and sketch Sunflowers. In the art studio we explored sideways lines, curves, swirls, and circles all present in Van Gogh's Starry Night masterpiece. Students used visual sketches and books to see how to make this movement in their art. Students have also begun oil pastel masterpieces inspired by Van Gogh's piece 15 Sunflowers.
Weather Project- We began a critical thinking activity by asking students "what do you know about the weather and what is something that you would like to learn?" It seems that many students have an interest in learning more about wind storms such as hurricanes and tornadoes! We began charting the weather each day by observing the conditions outdoors.
The Outdoor Dramatic play is set for students to enjoy the many stories of Dr. Seuss! Acting out Cat in the Hat, counting fish, and dressing like the Cat in the Hat will continue to be offered to students through the month. Students are enjoying sketching their favorite Dr. Seuss book and hearing the stories during literacy story journey!
Have you ever heard of Rainbow Hair? Well young authors are enjoying the poem Rainbow hair while sketching themselves with their own idea of rainbow hair. Eleacea even came to school with a small part of rainbow hair! Rainbow Poem: Rainbow purple, rainbow blue, rainbow green and yellow too, rainbow orange, rainbow red, rainbow colors on my head. Colors, colors everywhere, I like colors in my hair.

March Mantra: Do What Makes you Happy!!!
This week students meditated to the sound of birds chirping and a cool breeze rustling through the trees. They have begun to work on the poses in Garden Yoga Flow. Tree and Flower pose are difficult as they work left and right brain coordination and balance. Students are learning to move from pose to pose in a flow of movements demonstrating strength and coordination. In all yoga workshops this week we sketched the answer to the March Mantra while focusing on what happiness truly means to each of us!
