Murray's Gifted Gab
March 2020
A Note From Mrs. Shook
Somehow it is already March! Our 8th grade students have been busy making important decisions about high school. In case you haven't figured this out yet, if you blink you will miss middle school. We are fortunate to live in a county that has so many options: Traditional high schools, dual enrollment at the community college, Isaac Bear, Wilmington Early College, IB, and more! Even if your child is a 6th grader, I encourage you to start researching and having these important conversations early.
Enrichment activities are an important part of your child's day. Please check out this article that supports this concept. At Murray, we have a wonderful arts program and so many of my gifted students participate in band, orchestra, and/or theater. We also have a variety of competitions such as spelling bee, math fair, science fair, etc. It's so important that we find where your child fits at Murray and that we help them grow in various ways.
As the year progresses, if you have concerns or questions, please make sure you email me. I want to support you and your child to make sure they have a successful year at Murray.

8th Grade Parents
New Hanover County Schools employs two high school gifted education specialists who serve gifted students at the four traditional high schools. Gifted services at the high school level are aligned to the North Carolina AIG Standards and consist of, but are not limited to, the following services:
Consultative gifted services provided by the high school gifted education specialists
Advanced differentiated curriculum options
Enrichment opportunities
Career and college readiness planning
Murray AIG students met with the high school specialists on February 13th. Students received a copy of their academic blueprint to share and to discuss with parents. Academic blueprints should be used to advise students when registering for classes at the high school level. Middle and high school counselors will register gifted students for high school classes.
