Updates to Remember as we near the end of the Fall Semester
Thank you for all you have done at school and at home to make this year start successfully! We know that the transition from last school year with Connect and other allowances around school work has been challenging at times, but we are so proud of all that our Scholars are accomplishing both in and out of the classroom and know that working together, we will continue to PROWL like Panthers!
With a little over two weeks before the fall Thanksgiving holiday break (November 22-26), we wanted to share a few reminders about the end of the semester and some key dates coming up. We hope that with this information now, students can plan ahead and alleviate some of the stress that may come with the end of the fall semester.
Progress Report for Marking period 2 – open in Home Access Center Nov 3; this checkpoint average includes all assignments and tests due by October 29.
Next Progress Report for Marking period 2 – includes all assignments and tests taken through Nov 19; averages will be available after break on November 30. Parent requests to drop to on level are due to teachers by December 1.
End of the fall semester – December 17
- We WILL have fall semester exams this year the week of Dec 13-17. The schedule has not been released yet, but there will be no early release days for CFISD high schools. As we haven’t had finals in the last 18 months, here are some helpful reminders:
- Final exams are a cumulative assessment of the fall semester content taught. Teachers will have reviews for students, but it is expected that students do study their notes from the semester, complete any reviews, and attend school regularly in order to be successful on exams.
- Students may not take a final exam early. Students must test in the period they are enrolled.
- Final exams count for 1/7 of the fall semester average. We will review with students how to calculate the semester average so that they know what they need to make on the final for their goal semester average.
- Absences during finals: We cannot give “incompletes” at the semester, so any students who are absent at the end of the semester for class tests or the final exams will receive a 0 for the missed work. Upon return in January, students will have the week of January 4-13 to make up missed work and finals without late penalty. They will work with their teachers to arrange time after school to complete the missing tests.
- Exemptions: students with an average of 80 or higher for MP1 and MP2 are eligible to exempt the final exam for that class. Our teachers will review the full details with students in class.
- Freshmen – may exempt ONE final
- Sophomores – may exempt TWO finals
- Juniors – may exempt THREE finals
- Seniors – may exempt FOUR finals
ATTENDANCE during Finals Week:
- Exam periods: Students must remain in class the entire testing period, even if they finish the exam before the end of the period. If a student exempts a final exam (see below), the teacher will still count them absent for our records, but it will not penalize the student and they do NOT need a note for the absence.
- Non-exam periods: Attendance will be taken in each class period. If a student has a final exam in the morning and another one at the end of the day, the student should remain on campus for the classes in between. If a student has an afternoon final exam and is coming only for that exam, the student must be ON TIME in the classroom for the start of the exam.
A Recap – the importance of semester averages in your courses:
To receive credit in a course toward graduation, the semester average (calculated with both marking periods and the final exam) must be 70 or greater. The semester average is what shows on the high school transcript, which is what students send to colleges and other avenues for post-high school paths.
Advanced level courses (K, H, AP)
As stated in the K/AP Acknowledgement letter given to parents and students at the beginning of each school year:
- Students who receive an average of 74 or lower for the semester will be removed from the K-level class and placed in an appropriate L-level class for the following semester if an L-level class is available. Students who receive an average of 74 or lower for the semester will be removed from the AP class and placed in the appropriate L-level class for the following semester if an L-level class is available. An average of 74 or lower does not meet the entry criteria for a K-level class. No grade adjustments are made to semester averages. * The K-level entry/exit criteria apply to all HORIZONS students in HORIZONS/K-level clustered classes.
Also stated in the letter, any student who earns an average below 70 in a marking period will be removed from the K/AP class and placed in the appropriate L-level class in an L-level class is available. Parents may request a student be dropped to L-level at any progress report date or the end of the marking period, even if the student is passing.
In sharing this information, we hope to equip both students and parents with the tools to plan ahead and to finish strong this semester – attending school each day, participating in class, turning in work on time, attending tutorials, sitting for retest/redo opportunities on low grades when needed. This December will be the first time in three semesters that high school students return to a typical closing of the semester – and we want to ensure NOW that you have the necessary information to plan ahead and alleviate stress. Thank you again for your support and hard work – together, we will continue to be Panthers on the PROWL for Success!

It's Important to BE ON TIME
Punctuality reflects professionalism and attention to detail. ... Being punctual also means you'll have all the information needed to complete a project. Running even just a few minutes late to class can mean missing out on valuable facts that form the foundation of the rest of the discussion, assignment and even semester.
Excessive tardies can additionally lead to an unsatisfactory conduct grade and even loss of exemptions. Students who arrive to school (or a class) ten (10) minutes late receive an "after tardy". This results in a loss of seat time and possible excessive absences (EA) that can lead to loss of credit. If you have a question about your student's attendance, including tardies, please visit the Home Access Center. Please also encourage your student to always get to class on time.
