TWELFTH NIGHT

Twelfth Night or What You Will (1996) Official Trailer - Ben Kingsley, Helena Bonham Carter Movie HD

IDENTITY

In the Twelfth Night Duke Orsino identifies himself as a manly man. He shows feelings for the women he loves but only loves Olivia for her looks and not personality. He likes to be in charge. He believes the women should always listen to their husbands. He sees himself as a man who everyone respects. "...Let still the woman take. An elder than herself. So wear she to him, So sways she level in her husband's heart. For, boy, however we do praise ourselves, our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, more longing, wavering, sooner lost and worn, than women's are" (II.iv.28-34). This is basically Orsino saying how a woman should be younger so that they can get adjusted to the man's costumes.

GENDER

Duke is seen by everyone as a respectable man. A man who is suppose to not show his feelings but takes charge. Men in that era were suppose to not be weak but in charge. To have facial hair and have muscles. A man every woman dreams of marrying. He is suppose to marry someone of his class and a woman who is beautiful on the outside. "Then let thy love be younger than thyself, or thy affection cannot hold the bent. For women are as roses, whose fair flower being once displayed, doth fall that very hour" (II.iv.35-38). Orsino explains to Cesario that if he were to find an older woman then her beauty will leave her sooner.

PERCEPTION

In the play Twelfth Night characters view Orsino as a respectable man. No one seems to defy him or question his actions. Everyone who knows him, is loyal to him. They see Orsino as an honest man. A man who is brave and respectable. "Some four or five attend him. All, if you will, for I myself am best when least in company. (to Viola) Prosper well in this, And thou shalt live as freely as thy lord, to call his fortunes thine" (I.iv.36-40). As Orsino is saying this no one questions him. They do as they are told for he is the Duke and is extremely respected as a man.

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

Orsino is someone people tend to trust. Just like Orsino, people have a way of trusting me with private matters. Also, Orsino has a soft side. I have a soft side as well because you know, I am a girl.

Even though we have similarities we both differ in many ways. One being that Orsino believes a woman should love him because of his class. I believe people are allowed to fall in love with who they want, which ever class they are in. Orsino also expresses his feelings in many ways and does not keep it a secret that the one he loves is Olivia. As for I, I tend to not express my feelings very much at all.

SHE'S THE MAN

She's The Man - Trailer

IDENTITY

In the movie "She's The Man" Duke identifies himself as a macho man. He works out to keep himself in shape and likes girls for their looks. He is a very popular but he does not see himself as the most good looking guy. He has a heart he just does not let anyone know he has feelings. He also sees himself as a sporty guy. In the movie Duke and Sebastion (Viola) try out for the soccer team and Duke makes the team as well as Sebastian (She's The Man).

GENDER

Duke is forced to hide is feelings. If he were to express his true feelings for Olivia he would get made fun of. So, he is forced to hold them back. He works out in front of Olivia to show off his muscles. He also speaks to her in a low voice to show he is a man. But he has never really gotten to know Olivia and only seems to like her for her looks. In the movie Duke goes on a date with Olivia but they do not talk on the date at all. It's not until Viola shows up dressed as Sebastian that they pretend to make conversation (She's The Man).

PERCEPTION

In the movie other characters view Duke and a popular guy. He is known by almost everyone and all the girls flaunt over him. He is seen as the leader and everyone follows his commands. But Duke would see himself as a nice guy who just wants to meet that one someone to share his feelings with. In the movie Duke explains that he finds that perfect girl to share his feelings with, he is going to keep things to himself (She's The Man).

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

Duke and I share some similarities. For instance, in the movie Duke tells Viola/Sebastian that if he knew she was a girl he would not have told her some things he had already told her when he thought she was a boy. I am the same way. I can't just express my feelings with a guy. I have to have a girl listening and not a guy.

Even though we have a similarity, we do differ. In the movie Duke plays soccer. He is in a sport and is very good at it too. As for I, I do not play any sport at all. I cannot run fast enough to keep up with everyone else.
