How can Parents help?

This week, we will continue discussing the FPS strategy of 'Categories'.

17 FPS Categories

There are 17 categories that will be taught to the Future Problem Solving students. For the Bowl at EP, the students will be split in groups of 4 or 5 students. As a group, the 'teams' will need to memorize all 17 categories. To help, each child will be asked to recall one acronym: STREP, PLEDGE, CAB, BET

One student in the group will be responsible for memorizing the acronym PLEDGE for the FPS Bowl

Physical health includes anything that supports physical health, from proper medical care to good nutrition to regular exercise to a clean and healthy environment. Physical health can be affected by stress, lack of sleep, improper diet and unsafe behavior

Law & Justice police departments and local governments are responsible for making sure that laws are being followed. People who break laws face the possibility of arrest by police, followed by an appearance in a courtroom where a judge or jury will have to determine whether the person is guilty or innocent of breaking one or more laws. The court systems are run by local, state and federal governments. There is one system of courts for crimes such as property theft, physical harm and other forms of violence. There is another system of courts to hear cases involving disputes between people that may include medical malpractice, being fired from a job, having one’s reputation damaged by someone who says things that are untrue and hurtful.

Education: usually means formal education, such as public schooling from kindergarten through grade 12, as well as college education. Can also refer to adult education or homeschooling, as well as independent study, individual tutoring and apprenticeships.

Defense a broad category that starts with ensuring the physical safety of a single person and grows to include a community, a state and then the entire country. Civil defense and military defense are considered to be one of the basic responsibilities of governments.

Government & Politics the process by which we elect people to public office (from local positions such as township commissioners, up to and including national offices such as the US Senate and the President of the United States). Includes the responsibilities and authority that elected officials have in order to perform their jobs properly. The basic responsibility is to serve as guidelines for everyone in the country to follow, but those laws are created after the officials get advice from the people who will be affected by the laws.

Environment the natural world, consisting of oceans, land masses, the atmosphere, and the ecosystems of the many regions of the world. All human activity has some effect or impact on the environment, and in turn humans are dependent upon the natural environment for our very survival.
