North Glendale Family Update
August 16, 2020
Good evening!
Although the start of the year is online, please know that we are ready to provide high quality opportunities for kids to build relationships, have fun, and engage in new learning. . We have listened to families feedback regarding learning in the spring and took opportunities this summer to build on and improve our teaching from last Spring.
I'd like to take the opportunity to share our first priority for our online learning: building strong relationships and incorporating social and emotional learning. We know our kids have really been impacted by the Spring closure, the limitations we all faced this summer and now starting school on line. We will take the time to get to know our kids well so they will feel comfortable opening up to us about support they might need.
Because of the pandemic and the closure last year, the district has purchased additional assessment tools which will help teachers to identify skill gaps and receive targeted lessons to build their lagging skills. All students will need additional support of some type during the first nine weeks (reading, math, social emotional, etc). Our team of interventionists, including academic and social emotional staff, may be reaching out to you to schedule time with your child. It truly takes a village and we are so fortunate to have so many dedicated, hard working, and positive people in our village who will do whatever it takes to reach and support each child.
Of course our hope is that we get to return to school in person quickly. The district will continue to monitor and follow all health guidelines to ensure a safe return to the building. We look forward to serving our families and engaging students in a fun and memorable school year. This will definitely be one for the record books and one that I know that I will never forget.
As always, please reach out to me if I can be of service or support.

Class Lists
Classlists will be sent to families from your classroom teacher
TOMORROW, MONDAY AUGUST 17TH BY NOON.
As you have heard me say this summer, the class list puzzle has been a whole new ballgame in light of the pandemic! We have had daily enrollments and drops as families decide what is best for their kids. In addition, we provided an opportunity for families of twins to opt to have their kids together and have had to consider alphabetic balance of classes in case we move to a hybrid schedule. We were not able to take into account any requests regarding learning pods.
Many voices and minds are always involved in this process and as I do not know the kids yet, I found myself as an impressed observer. The staff of NG know every student so well ~ the placements we have landed on were all done with a great deal of thought and care.
As is the practice at NG (and has always been mine as a Principal)
we will not make changes to classists.

KSD N.O.W. - Nutrition on the Weekends: Registration for the 2020-2021 School Year
Kirkwood School District offers the KSD N.O.W. program to supply an array of nutritious, non-perishable meals and snacks for children experiencing food insecurity over weekends and extended breaks, free of charge. During the 2020-21 school year, boxes will be distributed to families at their homes via delivery in a discrete and caring manner once per month.
If you wish for your child(ren) to participate in the program, please complete the online form. Only one form is needed for all the school-aged children in your family, but please include information for each child on the form. This information is kept confidential between KSD N.O.W. and your child’s school.
Once your child is signed up, they will receive boxes of food each month of the school year or until you no longer wish to participate. KSD N.O.W. operates with a first come, first served model. If your form is received after the capacity has been reached, you will be placed on a waitlist.
If you have any questions or need a paper form, please contact program coordinator Emilie Lytton at ksdnow@kirkwoodschools.org. All inquiries will remain confidential.
Thank you.
If you have unmet food needs for your family, including older children, babies, or toddlers, please contact KirkCare at 314-965-0406 or dial 2-1-1 for referrals to food banks and social services in your area.
In order to receive support through KSD N.O.W. for the 2020-21 school year, please complete the online registration at https://www.kirkwoodschools.org/KSDNOWRegistration.
ALL FAMILIES MUST COMPLETE THIS FORM TO PARTICIPATE IN KSD N.O.W. Students who currently participate will not automatically be re-enrolled.
Meet Ups with Mrs. Sisul!
I am not posting any sign ups for the week of August 24 ~ the first week of school! We will be having grade level meet ups and I'd like us all to get a few days of school under our belts. I will post times for the week of August 31, next week!
Sign Ups for the Week of August 17
I will continue to post sign ups every Sunday, even after school starts. If you would prefer I come to you, I am happy to do so! Just reach out separately and we will find a time.
In order to accommodate as many kids as possible, the visits will be short and sweet and will probably include the obligatory popsicle and selfie!

Schoology Reminder
Monday, August 17, 2020, look for an email from news@kirkwoodschools.org that will provide a Schoology log-in code for parents. Please take a moment to create/sign in to the parent Schoology account. Parents need to have a parent Schoology account to receive important messages related to your child's learning. You may share this code with anyone supporting your child's learning.
If you do not receive this e-mail, it is because you have an activated Schoology account. If you can't remember your username and password, please visit the Schoology website to reset your password.
As noted in the 8/13 eSpotlight we heard you from the Spring and have established universal Schoology structures for teachers. We have therefore established universal (required) Schoology structures to use with Kirkwood students (K-12) in the year ahead. We hope this helps keep your virtual learning straight!
Please note: Student courses will not be viewable until Monday, August 17. Courses become active on the first day of school.
