Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term 3, Week 10 - 25 September 2020
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It is hard to believe that the term has quickly come to an end. Earlier in the week we held our final Assembly for the term. The highlight of the Assembly was the announcement of the Year 12 Student Leadership Team.
My congratulations to all the students selected and I wish them well in their leadership role for 2021. Next term the College will go through the process of appointing Student Leaders from Years 8 to 11.
Today the Year 12 students celebrated their last day at the College. The day commenced with a breakfast with staff and other planned activities across the day including a farewell assembly from each of their Houses.
Some of our Year 12 students will be completing their ATAR Practical Examinations next week. The following week, commencing on 5 October, they begin their End of Year Examinations, which will conclude on Wednesday 14 October. The College community extends our best wishes to all our Year 12 students sitting examinations.
A reminder to all parents who have younger children to commence Year 7 in 2023, that applications are required by the end of the 2020 academic year. Whilst we already have many applications for 2023, we do not commence our interviews until the beginning of the 2021 academic year.
Next term, all students, Years 7 to 11, begin on Tuesday 13 October. Students will be required to be attired in Summer Uniform for Term 4.
This week we said farewell to Br Sheldon Burke who leaves the College to take up his studies for the Priesthood. We wish him well in his journey and hope that he can remain connected to our College. Mrs Christina Howard and Mrs Mel Shariat will be on Long Service Leave during Term 4 and are being replaced by Jo-Anne Palmer and Ruth Coad respectively. I would also like to congratulate and extend our best wishes to our University of Notre Dame students, who have successfully completed their Teaching Practice at Emmanuel this term.
Finally I wish all the staff and students a safe and enjoyable holiday. I look forward to their return to school with a renewed energy for a busy Term 4.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
This week, we said farewell to our 2020 Year 12 Student Prefects and inducted our 2021 Prefects.
On behalf of the Student Leadership Team, students and staff at the College, I would like to thank Ishe and Caitlin, the Head Prefects for 2020 and the Year 12 Prefects, for their dedication and service to the College community throughout this year. They have led by example in all they have done, maintaining high standards in the classroom, participating in all College events and activities, both behind the scenes and as representatives of our College. They have led the students of the College with humility, bravery, compassion and respect for everyone they have encountered, and have been fine ambassadors for the College.
Much of the work they have done this year has been when no one was watching. The initiatives that have been implemented, such as the Wellbeing Warriors, establishing the Wellbeing Prefect as an ongoing Student Leadership position from 2021, and the chill zone at Emmanuel day, have provided us with lasting memories, and a legacy that will continue in the College for years to come.
Their steely resolve to plough on this year, despite the uncertainty that was in the world around them, is testament to their commitment to the College, the desire to enact change and their care and empathy for others. The 2020 Prefects have made it easy for others to follow. Caitlin, Ishe and their team of Prefects have provided a picture for College Leaders in future years.

ROE 8 VOLUNTEER WORK
As part of the practical component of the Bush Rangers modules, Year 10 students partnered up with Cockburn Council during Week 9 to help restore the Roe 8 Corridor after being bull dozed in 2016.
Linda Metz from the City of Cockburn spoke to the students about the importance of maintaining biodiverse regions in the metro area as well as corridors of land where the birds and animals can move through. She also discussed the safety precautions involved and highlighted the native shrubs and flowers to avoid.
The students put in an hour of power removing over 15 large bags of invasive weeds. The students should be proud of their efforts. They all really enjoyed the experience of being outdoors and giving something back to the community.
Mr Mark McGough - Director of Environmental Education

YEAR 8 BUSH RANGERS CAT HAVEN VISIT
This term, the Year 8 Bush Rangers have had a focus on fauna – learning about the native fauna in Western Australia as well as the impact of introduced species on that native fauna. This has meant a lot of incursions for the students, interacting with native fauna with snakes, dingoes, koalas and lizards to name a few.
The last incursion for this term was linked to the work students have been doing on reducing the impact of introduced species on the native wildlife. Lisa from the Cat Haven came in to talk about the different methods for reducing the impact of stray and feral cats on our native wildlife. Students explored the positives and negatives of each method looking at cost, human treatment and effectiveness. She also spoke about responsible pet ownership and the role the Cat Haven plays in protecting native wildlife and rehoming cats.
At the end of the session, students were allowed to assist with the socialisation of kittens who would be going up for adoption in the short term. Students were able to hold and play with the kittens, getting them used to different environments and people. Lisa did manage to go home with all six kittens that she brought – even if some students (and staff) were a little resistant!
Thank you to Lisa and the Cat Haven for coming out on our last lesson of the term.
Mrs Kylie Kingdon - Head of Humanities

MARKET DAY
Over the past five weeks, the Year 11 Cert III Business students have been working on their Market Day assessments. This consisted of a business pitch which was presented to their teacher, and an external ‘shark’, Eizer Ong. Within their business pitch, they stated how much capital was required and their projected profits for the event. If their business pitch was successful, they then moved onto creating a business plan and marketing matrix.
These components enabled students to work towards selling either a main food item, dessert or drink on two consecutive day’s during lunch at the College. On Wednesday 23 September, Miss Milne’s students served a range of dishes, including: crumbed chicken and chips, beef burritos, milkshakes, hot dogs, a dessert buffet, jelly cups and pulled pork rolls with gravy. On Thursday 24 September, Mr Silver’s class served fruit and chocolate skewers, butter chicken, pandan cake, bubble tea, nachos and spaghetti bolognaise.
All stalls were a sell-out, making a total profit of over $1,100. Both classes decided on a charity that they would like to donate the money to, this year being LifeLink.
Last year, LifeLink funded agencies reached out to help over 34,000 Western Australian families and individuals in need, delivering more than $54 million in caring services and professional programmes throughout WA. Not only did students learn some valuable lessons throughout their Market Day assessment, they were also able to raise funds for a worthwhile charity!
We would like to thank all the students and staff who participated, helped, and lent their expertise in order for us to run such a successful event!
Mrs Jessica Milne - Humanities & Social Science Teacher

VOLLEYBALL
During Term 3, the Year 10 SASJ Indoor Beach Volleyball team participated in the Perth West Division tournament against a group of our neighbouring schools including Seton Catholic College, Kennedy Baptist College, CBC Fremantle and Corpus Christi College. Our boys played brilliantly throughout the whole tournament and won every single match in which they played.
In Week 10, the team then travelled to Canning Vale Indoor Courts for the first time to play the winner of the Perth East Division, John Wollaston Anglican Community School. The match was won in straight sets with our boys being crowned champions. A massive congratulations to our Year 10 boys: Charles, Matthew, Jared, Kane, Ethan, Joseph, Riley, Adriel and Samuel.

Email: studentservices@emmanuel.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9414 4051
Digital Communication Preferred
If you wish to communicate with Student Services regarding your child’s late arrival, early departure, medical certificate or for any other reason we ask that you please do so by email or SMS rather than sending handwritten notes with your child. Please note, all communication pertaining to uniform should still be directed to your child’s Pastoral Care teacher, ideally by email or by supplying a handwritten note.
Organisation
Time management is a great quality of any successful student. Managing our time wisely helps us balance our daily lives and gives us more structure and moments to partake in the activities we enjoy. In order to encourage our students to maximise time in the classroom and manage their time effectively, we have requested all students access Student Services either before school, during recess, lunch or after school each day. Student Services is available for students to print, copy, access IT support, and to request a paracetamol or antihistamine.
Lost Property
Any named/labelled items of uniform sent to Student Services will be returned to your child. Students are also informed weekly, through SEQTA Notices, of all unnamed items of lost property.
Students Contacting Parents During the School Day
As per the College’s Respectful ICT Agreement signed by all students and parents at the commencement of the year, students are not permitted to use their phone or device to make or receive calls or send messages during the day. Any student who wishes to contact their parent to discuss any matter may only do so through Student Services.
