Fulmore Middle School Newsletter

Week of 01-18-2016

From the Principal

Greetings Falcon Families,

Congratulations to 8th grader Biak for being named as one of the AISD’s AVID Students of the Month for January! Biak is the second Fulmore Falcon this year to be recognized by AISD as Middle School Student of the month. We are thrilled to have such wonderful leadership in our AVID program. Thank you Mr. Paradise for setting the standard.

Hip, hip, hooray to all our students who were celebrated this week at our First Semester Award Ceremony. Students were recognized in four categories: Top Ten Academic Students, 3.5 or higher Grade Point Average, Perfect Attendance, and Falcon Pride Awards. To earn a Falcon Pride Award, each six weeks, teachers select two comprehensive and two magnet students at each grade level who demonstrate: academic improvement, good citizenship, leadership, perseverance, and positive or improved attitude. We are proud of these Falcons for their fine work first semester.

Reminder that Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will see all our Falcons on Tuesday morning.

This coming Tuesday, January 19th from 5:30 to 7:30, our annual Evening of Wonder featuring our Magnet Program. In addition to sharing information about the Magnet program, families will have to the opportunity to explore all facets of Fulmore Middle School and our offerings to potential magnet, comprehensive, and dual language students. It will be a fabulous opportunity to visit our programs and see student performances, discussions, and work in action. Please spread the word and encourage others to attend.

On Wednesday, 7th grade students will be taking Middle of Year (MOY II) Writing test. We will be administering all MOY II tests in STAAR format meaning that students will be assigned a testing room and will have a block of time to complete the test. Students who are not testing will be participating in camps so that instruction continues.

Here are several tips you can do to prepare your child for successful testing:

· Set a regular bed time that allows nine to ten hours of sleep each night. To get a good night’s rest only before the test is not good enough; sleep habits must be regular.

· Have a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of water.

· Talk with your child about the importance of doing his/her best at all times and that extra attention to details during assessments is a must! Assessments are an opportunity for students to show off what they know and an opportunity for teachers to see where strengths and/or areas of growth are still needed for instructional purposes.

· Encourage your child to take his/her time during assessments; however, day dreaming and napping are not acceptable. STAAR is a timed test, and we want students to get in the practice of self-pacing.

A big, Texas style – THANK YOU Y’ALL – to Ms. Parker and our wonderful PTA for treating us to breakfast on Thursday morning. Our breakfast treat is now occurring monthly for our hard work Falcon teachers and staff. If you haven’t already joined PTA, it is never too late. Also, if you are interested in being a board member next year, please contact Ms. Parker, our current PTA President at:

Wishing you a wonderful three day weekend.

Fellow Falcon Families:

TEACHER BREAKFASTS: Thanks to all who contributed to PTA’s 1st Teacher breakfast of 2016! It was a great success, as usual! This is our inaugural year of providing monthly teacher breakfasts and they’ve been very well-received. We are still looking for 2 co-chairs willing to help ensure this great event is sustainable and continues next year. We’d be glad to answer any questions and discuss with you. Please contact Diane Parker at dianeparker241@gmail.com.

MAGNET NIGHT OF WONDER: An upcoming event that’s of particular interest to the Magnet program is the annual Night of Wonder, scheduled for January 19th. This is the Magnet program’s showcase for prospective students and their parents. This important event greatly benefits from broad-based parent support, including providing snacks, helping set up and guiding prospective students & families around campus. Two PTA members, Genevieve Dell and Michael Currie, have graciously agreed to speak to the group about what Fulmore means to them; thanks to both! We’ve still got volunteer slots available. Remember how confusing this all was when you were exploring Fulmore? Consider volunteering to be that parent ambassador and spread the word about our wonderful gem in SoCo! Here’s the link to Volunteer Spot:

THANK-YOUS TO BUSINESS SPONSORS: Jo’s Coffee provided the excellent coffee for the breakfast and Panera Bread generously donated their bread and pastries. Many teachers were able to have breakfast and take home an extra loaf of bread. Thanks to both these generous Fulmore business supporters! Also, a big thank-you goes out to P. Terry’s which recently gave some gift cards which Ms. Bush can use as teacher rewards. If anyone has a business connection or has a business themselves that might be interested in partnering with Fulmore, please contact Diane Parker at dianeparker241@gmail.com. We would like to increase the depth and breadth of our business support, whether in-kind or through cash donations.

BOX-TOPS FOR EDUCATION: As you look forward to your day off next Monday, remember that HEB is running some special deals offering bonus Box Tops. Each box top is worth .10 to a school, and these items which you buy already can add up to real income for a school, particularly when we get bonus points through grocery store promotions. Keep an eye out for these deals this weekend, as the specials run through January 19th.
