Math 6
One Month Down
We have made it through the first month of middle school! It was a big change for all the students and now we are starting to see everyone get settled and comfortable. The comfortableness can be both good and bad. To some students, this means more participating and more questions. For other students, this means trying out an attitude and testing the limits of work output. I even see a mix of both while students adjust to who they are at West. Talk to your 6th grader about their highlights and areas for improvement in their learning. I would love to hear some feedback!
Homework
Hopefully you have seen three of these! The fourth will be coming home tomorrow. While it does not count towards a grade, they are collected and looked over. The continual practice is great for keeping math minds sharp!
PowerSchool
Have you signed up yet? Better late than never! Checking in on your child's grades adds another layer of caring: student, parent, and teacher all working together for success!
Encourage Questions!
While I may be a tad obsessed with math, many of the students are not. Math is a process that many are not comfortable with: try, fail, try again. Failing is a great thing and many of us get there. Our struggle is getting to the try again stage. Encourage your students to ask questions of you, me, and even the internet!
We are headed into the fourth week of our ratios and proportions unit. A ratio is a comparison between two quantities (the title above is a link to a short video introduction on the topic). So far, students have explored identifying ratios and finding equivalent ratios through the use of various models. Over the next two weeks, we will continue focus on proportional ratio models, compare ratios, and delve in to measurement conversions. If all goes as planned, we will be testing over this unit on September 29th or 30th. Look for a study guide coming home next week!
