Highlander Happenings September 2 – September 14, 2019

Big picture

ACADEMICS:

ADVISORY SCHEDULE - We will begin Advisory on September 11, 2019.

EVENING TUTORIALS - Evening tutorials are offered for Math and Science help on the senior campus from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in room 302. Students should bring their assignments to work on during this time. This is a come and go opportunity for students. The tutorials are staffed by TWHS math and science teachers. Students are expected to sign in and out on the iPad.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS -

Students that will be taking Advanced Placement Exams in May 2020 must complete the new registration process implemented by College Board.

The exam ordering process is TWO parts. Both have to be completed by the November 3, 2019, deadline to guarantee an exam on test day and avoid late fees, unless specifically described below. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that both required steps listed are completed.

Step 1. Register for the exam on the https://myap.collegeboard.org/login website using the Join Code provided by your instructor.

*Do NOT create duplicate accounts with College Board

If you do not know your login information begin by using the ‘Forgot Username’ option on the myap.collegeboard.org website – follow the prompts

If you cannot confirm that you have or don’t have an existing account after completing that process, call College Board at 888.225.5427 and they can determine if you have an existing account and they will provide the username. You will then need to go and complete the ‘Forgot Password’ process if you still do not remember you password.

If you are planning on taking an AP Exam but will not be in the course at TWHS during the 2019-2020 school year, you must see Mrs. Shepard in the Grade Level Office to receive the EXAM ONLY Join Code. Students in Exam Only sections will not have access to the online prep materials provided by College Board. The deadline for Exam Only sections is November 3, 2019.

If you are not in the class in the Fall Semester but will be in the class in the Spring Semester, you will register on the myap.collegeboard.org websiter by the February 23, 2020, deadline.

Step 2. Pay for the exam(s) through the TWHS School Cash Online Webstore.

Exams are $100/exam ($55/exam for students in the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program - https://www.myschoolapps.com/).

After the November 3, deadline there is a $40/exam late fee for students enrolled in the class in the fall semester, Exam Only sections, and/or Homeschool students.

.

It is the student’s responsibility to check their myap.collegeboard.org account to make sure that the appropriate exams are ordered and keep a copy of the receipt from the School Cash Online Web Store purchase. A confirmation letter will be sent out after the November 3, deadline for students to check their registration for accuracy.

If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Shepard in the Grade Level Office on the Senior Campus (936-709-1219) or your teacher for assistance.

NINTH GRADE PSAT - For your child’s convenience, the PSAT will be offered at the Ninth Grade Campus on Wednesday, October 16, during the school day. The PSAT/NMSQT is the Preliminary SAT test. The PSAT test is optional and available to all interested freshmen. It is recommended for students who are currently enrolled in geometry or algebra II as freshmen. The cost of the test is $18. JROTC: Congratulations to cadets Jordan Pimentel and Dylan Anderson for aerospace achievements! Dylan Anderson received a Young Eagles Certificate for participating in an orientation flight after hours of online practice, and Jordan Pimentel received her Solo Flight Wings for successfully flying an aircraft without her instructor on board!

Congratulations to cadets Anthony Campbell, Jace Alling, Isa Devia Luna, Hollie DePriest, Will Beasley, Alexander Sanderson, Dylan Anderson, Nick Verhelle, and Lauren Gerdts on receiving merits for helping to place parking curbs in the parking lot for our brand new JROTC drill training area. They displayed service before self and came on a voluntary basis.

All after-school activities are now in session! Physical training, orienteering, aerospace, drill, and marksmanship are now running weekly for all of our cadets. All cadets are welcome to try any or all of them and find out what suits them best!

Important Upcoming Events: Our next Spirit Night is Wednesday, September 11th, at Willie’s Icehouse. Come support our Booster Club--mention JROTC and Willie’s will donate a percentage of your check. Our Freshman Mixer is Saturday, September 14th, 11:30am to 1:30pm in the 9th Grade Campus cafeteria. All freshmen and their flight commanders (and parents!) are invited for an informal time to get to know each other. Please bring a covered dish or dessert to share!

PTO:

The Woodlands High School PTO has launched an online Spirit Wear Store! You can purchase all your spirit wear needs online in the comfort of your home.

Here is how it works. Go to https://twhs-spiritwear.myshopify.com/. When you select your items and you are ready to check out, you will see a notes section. In this section please indicate Senior or 9th campus for pick up. Any order that does not make an indication will automatically go to Senior Campus. Once an order is placed please allow 48 business hours to complete. You will receive a notification when it’s ready for pick up. You are then able to head to your designated campus for either you or your student (at appropriate times) to pick up your purchase. All purchases are pick up only at the Front Desk among our in-house spirit wear display.

Thank you to all our volunteers for helping orientation run so smoothly at both campuses. We couldn't have done it without you.

SCHOOL NEWS:

TWHS Improv: The “Surprisingly Funny” Woodlands High School Improv Troupe is thrilled to host their FIRST show of the school year on September 7th at 7 pm in the TWHS Auditorium! Tickets are $5 and all the money raised from the night will be going to The CISD Buddy Backpack Program (Montgomery County Food Bank)! Make sure to bring all your family and friends for a fun night full of family-friendly humor while helping The CISD Buddy Backpack Program!

The Buddy Backpack program is a CISD program that provides nutritious, non-perishable, easy to prepare food to children to ensure they get enough food on the weekends and holidays to avoid hunger when they can't depend on school meals. All food is put in to backpacks for the students to take home and return on Monday. The program is a partnership between CISD and the Montgomery County Food Bank.
