Resilience: Our relationship with stress
We hear it all the time in the media. We are a stressed out society. Our kids are stressed. Stress causes illness, stress is unhealthy, stress is BAD! Really? It turns out our relationship with stress is more complicated than that. Can stress actually be good? Although huge doses of stress can be overwhelming, mild to moderate stress can help us grow. Whether stress is unhealthy or not depends on how we think about it and how we react to it. Our bodies react to a stressful situation by preparing us to take action. This feeling can be uncomfortable, but if we use that energy in a productive manner, then stress can be healthy and helpful. So, how can we help children and teenagers develop a healthy relationship with stress?
* Normalize stress, it is part of life. Stress is a message. Ask them to pay attention to the stress. What is it trying to tell them? Use that information to plan a course of action.
* Remind them stress is the body’s way to prepare for a challenge, and in challenge there is the opportunity for growth. Encourage your child to take action.
* Encourage your child not to avoid the stressful situation. Often, the tendency is to avoid, because that can result in temporary relief from stressful feelings. But, avoidance can often make things worse in the long run. Plus, an opportunity for growth may be lost.
* Seek help if stress is overwhelming. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, it is taking action. It is a positive step toward growth.
So, welcome mild and moderate stress. It helps us grow. For more information check out Kelly McGonigal’s Ted Talk, "How to Make Stress Your Friend".
