Comet Connection

October Edition

Principal's Message

Greetings Britt Families,

I hope you enjoyed your fall break. Fall is such a glorious time of year. The arrival of fall means that it is time for fall conferences. You should have received a letter from your child's teacher inviting you to sign up for a conference on PTC fast, our conference organizing site. Please take this opportunity to talk with your child's teacher. If you did not get the letter or email, don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher to resend it.

Our teachers will be conferencing the week of October 18. Wednesday, October 20, will be a digital learning day where students will learn primarily asynchronously so that teachers can talk with you. October 21 is an early release day which means that the school day ends at 12:50 pm that day so that teachers can offer additional conference opportunities that afternoon. Conferences will be virtual. If you would like to meet in in-person, please let your child's teacher know, and we can accommodate that request.

We think that it is essential that parents talk to their child's teacher. However, sometimes that is not possible. If you can't meet with your child's teacher but would like someone on your emergency contact list to get the information for you, please let the teacher know that you have asked that person to represent you at a conference. Teachers will not meet with someone other than the parents or guardians unless they have received written permission from you.

Thank you to everyone who came out for PTA's Skate Night. It was wonderful to see the students spinning around the rink laughing. Their joy was infectious. Ms. Ward's class won the Golden Skate for having so many representatives. Our next Skate Night is planned for November 18 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Sparkles. I wonder if Ms. Ward's class will keep the skate or pass it on to a new class.

Our superintendent, Dr. Calvin Watts, recently emailed you with concerns about social media's influence on our students. Because of the anonymity, our children sometimes make choices that they would not make in person. We are working to help our students learn how to be positive digital citizens, and we need you to join us in reinforcing these lessons. Please help your child understand that they are responsible for their words and actions on and offline. Just because they read something on social media or someone told them to do something, they need to use their integrity to determine if something is right. Using unkind words, making threats, committing vandalism, or hitting others is inappropriate and only tears people down. We need to raise up each other. Our goal is to help our children become successful adults. Below is a Social Media Tip Sheet to help your child have safe social media experiences. I appreciate your support in this endeavor.

Last month, I surprised 30 students with breakfast and the Student of the Month title for their classroom or special. Their teachers chose these 30 students because they consistently exhibited politeness, an aspect of our Comet PRIDE's t (Polite, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Effort). This month, I will recognize another set for being a role model for the Respect trait. Congratulations to our September Students of the Month.

Thank you for all your continued support of Britt Elementary. I appreciate your partnership this year.

Best regards,

Melissa Madsen

Thank you Burlington

Recently, Burlington opened a new store in Snellville on Scenic Highway/124. Because they care about our community, they partnered with Adopt a Classroom and donated $5000 to our teachers to spend on their classrooms. We are grateful to Burlington and Adopt a Classroom for this opportunity to add additional resources for our students.
