Math

New fun ways to work with decimals

Facts:

  • Decimals: Are based on the number 10 and contain a decimal point.
  • Column addition is aligning the decimals in order to solve the equation.

Adding with decimals

To add decimals, follow these steps:

  • Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up.
  • Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length.
  • Then add using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer by aligning it up.

Subtracting with decimals

To subtract decimals, follow these steps:

  1. Write down the two numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up.
  2. Add zeros so the numbers have the same length.
  3. Then subtract normally, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer by aligning it up.

Multiplying with decimals

Just follow these steps:

  1. Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal points. (DO NOT ALIGN THE DECIMALS)
  2. Then put the decimal point in the answer by counting the decimal PLACES and counting and adding them to the answer .

Dividing decimals by whole numbers

To divide a decimal number by a whole number:

  1. Divide normally.
  2. Put the decimal up, make sure the decimals of the top and bottom are aligned up where the answer goes.

Dividing decimals by decimals

To divide decimal numbers:

  1. If the divisor is not a whole number, move decimal point to right to make it a whole number and move decimal point in dividend (inside) the same number of places.
  2. Divide as usual.
  3. Put decimal point directly above decimal point in the dividend.
