Volume 3, Issue 4 - September 6, 2019
As the school year gets busier with activities and homework workload, some students struggle with balance. Here are some ways how you can support your student:
- Choose a regular time and place for homework - It should be a quiet location if possible, and free from distractions (those cellphones!)
- Allow for some free time - Kids need to blow off steam after school by exercising or talking about their days.
- Postpone screen time - TV, cellphone, and video games take time away from priorities, including reading, homework, and chores. Save the screen time for after those things are done.
- Encourage organization - Productive studying starts with a to-do list!
- Pay attention - Homework time is a chance for you to learn about your child... what skills do they have? What are the struggles?
- Be supportive - Don't ever do your child's homework for him, but do stay nearby and supervise. It's ok to answer questions and guide your student through problems. However, if he needs too much help, talk with their teacher.

News from the Nurse
As we start the new school year, this is a good time to review the CPS illness guidelines.
Students exhibiting the following symptoms will be sent home and/or should remain at home if they exhibit any of the following:
- Temperature of 100 degrees or greater
- Vomiting with associated signs of illness
- Diarrhea
- Unusual or unexplained rash
- A concerning health condition that may require further medical evaluation
- Ongoing symptoms of discomfort or immobility from an injury
**If the use of crutches or wheelchair is needed at school, please provide doctors note**
Students may return to school when:
- They are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours
- Other conditions (rash, injury or health concern) subside or with a provider’s note
Please also note, that in middle school, students get the freedom of responsibility to carry a dose of their own over the counter (OTC) medication. In middle school, students have permission to carry one day’s dose of over the counter medication to school in a labeled container. Examples are ibuprofen, Tylenol, Benadryl, allergy and cold medicine, cough drops, throat lozenges, eye drops, TUMS, Pepto-Bismol and Imodium.
Reminder to athletes staying after school for sports: don’t forget to carry with you medications such as inhalers, diabetic supplies, etc. that you may need during practice and games. Quick access to your supplies can prevent emergencies!

Technology Boot Camp for Parents
Do you know how to log in to the CPS Families Portal? Do you know how to look at your students grades to see how they are progressing? Do you want to see their assignments on Schoology? If you need any of these questions answered, we will be holding a Technology Boot Camp for Parents, on Wednesday, September 18th to help answer your questions. Mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend! There will be a short PTSA meeting at 6:00, followed by the Boot Camp at 6:30 pm. The Boot Camp is expected to last approximately 1 hour.
iPad Connectivity Issues at Home?
Students must connect to their home WiFi network as well as our iBoss filter in order for the iPad to work at home. In order to do this, student should follow these steps.
- Connect to your home WiFi network - ask the folks at home to help you find this and use your home network password.
- After you are connecting to WiFi, click on the Safari App, and then click on the Google button. This will trigger the CPS "iBoss box" for you to enter your username and password. When you are fully connected, your iPad screen will switch to the CPS District home page. For more information, see this attachment.

Advisory Lessons for September 9-13
During the week of September 9th-13th, Gentry students will be introduced to the fundamentals for building healthy relationships with others.
In addition to this, students will also learn the working definition of stress and how to recognize and manage it. Students will learn that their stress levels can also be impacted by their organizational skills or lack thereof. They will be reminded that the simple use of their planners can alleviate some of their stress by allowing them opportunities to plan accordingly for things as they approach. Lastly, students will learn that a simple organizational system can save them time, energy and stress.
Picture Retake, New Student Photos and Yearbook Orders
Interstate Studios will return to Gentry on September 26 to retake photos for those students who would like to have their photos retaken. If your student is having their photo retaken, they will simply need to bring their original photo packet and uncut photos to this sitting.
On this same day, we will also be taking photos of those students who missed having their initial photo taken at our Schedule Pick Up Day. Please be sure that your student has an order form (located in the main office) and money with them to give to the photographer that day or use the code below to pre-order you child's photos.
