Uttarakhand 2013
Introduction
Uttarakhand is a nice place with total area of 53484 km square.It is a place rich in nature with great mountaines ,forests and the famous Ganges and Yamuna orginate here.famous temples found here Badrinath and Kedarnath is well known as "land of gods".It was a peaceful region and everything was going well for the people of uttarakhand untill one mansoon season in 2013.
In June 2013,
A multiday cloud burst(extreame precipitation) took place in the state of Uttarakhand creating devastating floods and landslides.It effected neighbouring regions Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.Even some regions of Western Nepal and Western Tibet experienced heavy rainfall.More than 5700 were presumed dead out of which 934 local residents.It was the country's worst natural disaster since 2004 tsunami.
Causes (natural reasons)
Uttarakhand recieved heavy rainfall during the monsoon which is above benchmark above 375%.Due to continous rain the Chorabari glacier melted and this triggered the bursting of the Mandakini river and this led to heavy flood .
Causes (man-made reasons)
It was found out that nature wasn't the only villain behind the heavy flooding.The main reasons for this disaster is growth of tourism, urbanisation and unplanned contructions are major reasons for landslides.Rapid growth of hydroelectrical dams that disrupt water balances also triggered this disaster.
Areas in Uttarakhand which was badly effected
Kedarnath
This town is the worst effected .It is religiously important place were thousands of Hindu piligrims come to visit the shrine and temple.
Yamunotri
It is the source of river Yamuna and seat of goddess Yamuna according to the Hindus.It is also a sacred region for the Hindus where the temple is devoted to goddess Yamuna.
Gangotri
It is the origin of river Ganges and another popular Hindu piligrim town.
Steps taken
Army
The army took part in the rescue operations and several thousands of soldiers were used for this .
Air Force
About 43 aircrafts were deployed by the air force for the rescue missions
Local community
ITBP jawans distributed medicines to the piligrims and local people distributed food to the rescued piligrims.
Conclusion
Moral of this disaster
This disaster shows the destructive power of nature when handled in a wrong way by we humans. This is a lesson for all states, regions and countries worldwide who are planning extreame urbanisation. Remember our nature harms us only when we harm them first.
