Should students choose their own classes?

All About Me

Hi I'm Lily and 15 years old. I'm the person in the back of the class with my headphones in. I sometimes understand what the teacher is talking about or how to do the work even if I don't have my headphones in. Math and science is the subjects that I'm best at, but writing papers and essays are hard for me. I barley do my homework unless I know how to do it, which means most of the time my grades are dropping. I always have people telling me that I need to get my grades up because my grades are going to determine my future. I would always ask myself, why can't I determine my own future? Why do my grades have to run my life?

Should students choose their own classes?

This topic is important to me because i feel some of the classes that we “have” to take will be unnecessary for what most of us will do when we are more grown.I feel that basic math, basic english, history, and geography/science is something that we all need to know but all the other subjects that are “electives” should be chosen for our selfs.I’m sure if someone that wants to know more advance math for a job in engineering will take it.As to a student that doesn’t want to know that much math and more business or more about photography or even art I’m sure they would choose that other then something they couldn’t really care for.I assume most students would like to study something that they are interested in because everyone is interested in something.

For

I feel that others can agree with my question. Like a person from the site "debate.org" on the topic of "Should high school kids be able to choose their own classes?" says "Students are wasting their time on classes in high school that they most likely will not use in the future for their job. I think focusing more on specific classes that have to do with what he/she wants to be after college will help out everyone. Kids will be more educated on their job, and that more advanced and farther ahead." One this site there are people that have the same views.

Against

Others feel that the kids shouldn't be able to. Like a person from the site "debate.org" on the topic of "Should high school kids be able to choose their own classes?" says "Students would not choose any classes that will help them in future times. Students will choose all of the easy classes and not have any knowledge of reading, writing, science, and math. Classes will be too full for their teachers and they might go insane. Students should not get to choose their own classes." I see where a person with this view is coming from.
