Happy December! It is hard to believe it is December already; even students are telling me that they feel like time is passing so quickly. It has been wonderful seeing our elementary students get vaccinated against COVID this month. If you missed the district vaccine clinic, here are some more places to get vaccinated easily: North Shore Pharmacy, Walgreens, CVS, Children's Hospital of WI - Primary Care Clinics, and Hayat Pharmacy. Important this week: Report cards are ready to view. Read more below if you need help viewing your child's report card.

ACCESS English Proficiency Testing Opens December 1
ACCESS for ELLs (English Language Learners) is an English language proficiency test that measures students’ academic English language skills. If your child was identified as a multilingual learner, your child can have instruction in English as appropriate and in-class language support.
Students who are in the ML (Multilingual Learner) program take an English language proficiency test every year. Testing helps teachers understand students' language skills. Your child’s teachers use ACCESS for ELLs test scores as they decide how best to teach your child. Test scores also help teachers track your child’s progress in learning academic English and help schools decide what English language support services to provide. You can use test information to advocate for your child at school.
The assessment has four parts: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The state and federal government both mandate that all ML students take the assessment every year until students reach an overall score of at least 5, on a scale of 1-6. Results are expected in April and will be communicated to families then.

Happy Hanukkah!
From History.com: " The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts." You can read more by clicking here.
Also, don't forget that Pebblego.com has some great, simple articles for kids about many holidays, including Thanksgiving and Hanukkah. (Username: bluff, password: school)
If your family would like to share photos or stories of your celebrations, please email them to me at jconigliaro@shorewood.k12.wi.us. Lake Bluff students enjoy sharing and learning about each other's traditions and celebrations.
