Happy Financial Literacy Month!
From David McRae, State Treasurer -
More than half of Mississippians (about 56%) have fewer than $1,000 in savings. What's more, about 38% have no savings at all. So, what happens when the tires wear out on your car? Or a child gets hurt? Or there's something in your home that needs repairing?
With so many in Mississippi living paycheck-to-paycheck, there are no easy solutions. But even putting away a few dollars a week can make a big difference. So, where does one start?
Since about 3 in 5 adults don't keep a budget, creating a financial plan might be a good first step for you and your family.
>>Resource: Rework Your Budget
Here's how a budget can help:
- Map out your financial goals, such as paying off credit card debt, buying a home, or saving for a child's college tuition.
- Become aware of where your money is going.
- Understand how much you can feasibly spend and save each month.
- Track progress.
There are a number of resources on the State Treasury website to help you create an emergency fund or rework your budget. Check them out at Treasury.MS.gov/FinancialEducation.
