What Causes The Nasty

AIDS is the more advanced stage of HIV infection. When the immune system CD4 cells drop to a very low level, a person's ability to fight infection is lost. Without treatment, HIV advances in stages, overwhelming your immune system and getting worse over time.


Three stages

(1) acute HIV infection- flu-like symptoms

(2) clinical latency- experience no symptoms, or only mild ones.

(3) AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).- badly damaged and you become vulnerable to

opportunistic infections.

How Common and Complications

Every 9½ minutes, someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV. It is estimated that there are over 56,000 new cases of HIV in the U.S. each year.

HIV infection weakens your immune system, making you highly susceptible to numerous infections and certain types of cancers.


At this time, there is no cure for AIDS, but medications are effective in fighting HIV and its complications.
