Fork Shoals Library Ledger

News for the week of September 24th

Get ready for the Fall Book Fair!

The Fork Shoals Library will have three book fairs again this year, and our first fair will be October 8-12 (with a special parent/teacher preview day on Friday, October 5th).

The whole school is excited about our upcoming Book Fair. An amazing selection of books is headed our way! At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. Mark your calendar for our Family Event (Monday, October 8th, 5-7pm) where the whole family can join in the fun. And, you can contribute books to your child's classroom library. The Book Fair is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. See you at the Book Fair!

If you're out of town or can't make it to our Book Fair, you can also help support our school by shopping online. The online fair dates are September 30-October 20. The online fair has an expanded book selection, and all orders ship free to the school!

*Reminder: 6% sales tax is added to all book fair purchases. Cash, checks, and major credit cards are accepted. Checks must be made payable to Fork Shoals School.*

Proceeds from the Fall Book Fair will be used to purchase library books and materials and provide for an author visit in February.

Book of the Week: The Romeo and Juliet Code by Phoebe Stone

The Romeo and Juliet Code introduces readers to Felicity Bathburn Budwig, a young British girl who is moving to Maine to stay with relatives for the duration of World War II. Her parents leave her with family members she’s never met, and Felicity doesn’t really know where her parents are going or when–or if–they will return for her. They don’t even write to her…but they do send letters to her Uncle Gideon. Felicity is barely allowed to touch these letters. That, of course, makes her want to know what the letters are hiding.

With the help of Derek, a boy who lives with the Bathburn family, Felicity learns that these mysterious letters are codes being sent from her parents. But what do they say? What is the code’s connection to Romeo and Juliet? Do the codes have anything to do with the war that is sure to involve America at any moment? Just what are her parents involved in? And can Felicity and Derek figure everything out–including the mystery surrounding the turmoil in the Bathburn family–before they lose their minds? Discover the truth when you read The Romeo and Juliet Code by Phoebe Stone.

Use Goodreads.com to keep track of your reading!

Do you ever have trouble keeping track of what you’ve read? Have you ever come home from a bookstore only to discover that you already have a copy of the book you just bought? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then Goodreads might be the site for you!

According to the site, “Goodreads is the largest site for readers and book recommendations in the world. We have more than 6,900,000 members who have added more than 240,000,000 books to their shelves. A home for casual readers and bona-fide bookworms alike, Goodreads users recommend books, compare what they are reading, keep track of what they’ve read and would like to read, find their next favorite book, form book clubs and much more. Goodreads was launched in January 2007.”

I’ve been using Goodreads for about two years now, and it has really helped me to keep track of my reading. I post reviews of the books I’ve read, I enter contests to win free books, I participate in online book clubs, I interact with some of my favorite authors, and I take quizzes on books. I’ve still got a lot to explore on this site, but it is already one of my favorite spots on the web. If you’re an avid reader, I think it will be the same for you!

Our Fall Frenzy is November 3rd from 10:00-3:00. This is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year. PTA is still in need of sponsors for the $50 or $100 level as well as products/services for the silent auction. Contact them at forkshoalspta@gmail.com if you can help. They are also asking for $5 donations that will help cover the costs for the cake walk and soda toss.

Family Bingo Night

Come join us for bingo, food, fun and prizes! The 5th grade is hosting Family Bingo Night on Friday, September 28, 2012. We will play 7 games of bingo with different challenges per game. The winner of each game will win a fantastic prize. Some of the prizes include giftcards, Thirty-One products, or gift baskets. $5.00 includes 7 game boards (one board per game). Additional boards will be available to purchase at the start of each game for $1.00 each. Food is also available for pre-orders. Order forms can be found on the front page of our school website at www.greenville.k12.sc.us/forksh or in our main office. We hope to see you here!
