St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 7 | 17 March 2022
Message from Geordie
Good afternoon to our St Bernie’s Community,
I hope that you are all managing to keep your families safe, calm and upbeat in what has been a challenging few weeks. Here at school, we are doing everything we can to keep it as normal as possible and even though our Swimming Carnival was a little different this year, I think the kids have had a great day. Thanks to Tara Bowe and Kristy Watson for their amazing organisation in challenging circumstances, thanks to our parent volunteers and to all the parents who came out to watch. It was great to see our kids giving their best and making the most of the day!
On Monday our Student Leaders spent the day with Mrs Resuggan and Mrs Nagle at the Leaders Forum in the city. Already our student leaders have lead by example, have been proactive in voicing ideas and opinions, demonstrated they are resilient and have supported the school in many ways. I look forward to working with all our Year 6 students this year.
After a week of try-outs and training, Mr Murtagh and Mrs Cairns took a group of Year 5 and 6 students off to the Interschool Cricket Carnival on Wednesday and this was a lot of fun. Again, thanks to the parent helpers and staff who organised the day.
This week in our Staff Meeting we began a conversation around the type of data we collect, how it is used and how we can become more consistent in our judgments of student achievement, specifically in English. As they always do, our staff engaged in robust discussion about what data looks like across the grades. This continued throughout the staff meeting and during our planning meetings. I look forward to continuing these discussions over the coming weeks - aligning our thinking before our reports go home in Term 2.
Before I go, I wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for their support as COVID numbers have increased and we have had positive cases within the school. Thanks for the respectful way you have asked questions, I encourage this to continue – there are NO silly questions in this space! We are all learning on the fly and I understand it is challenging to keep up when the rules keep changing. Here at St Bernie’s we will keep doing everything we can to keep our students safe, happy and learning!
If you or your child does receive a positive result over the weekend, please use the form on the Families Page of the website to record the information. I will check it regularly over the weekend and be in touch. There is also a link below.
Each week in the newsletter, I will report to the community the number of positive student cases within the school. You will also receive an email if there has been a positive case in your year group. For privacy reasons we can’t release students’ personal information and I ask all parents not to discuss this in any public forum, especially social media. If you have questions or concerns, please give the school a call.
Enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing you all next week!

Covid -19 Update
This week in COVID News…St Bernadette’s currently has 8 ongoing positive cases across the school. I would like to again thank our community for being so supportive and vigilant and while there is still a rocky road ahead, we will continue to work in partnership with parents to keep our students safe and happy.
This news should come as a timely reminder for all members of the community to monitor COVID-19 symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop.
Advice for all families and staff:
- The school remains open.
- We ask that you monitor your child/yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested and isolate until you receive a negative result if symptoms develop.
- If you or your child develop symptoms, please do not attend school.
- Please note that the Omicron strain can present with less typical symptoms such as diarrhoea, particularly in children.
Our school continues to work in partnership with WA Health as we respond to the pandemic.
If you have queries or concerns regarding your child please contact me. If you have health concerns, please contact WA Health on 1300 316 555 or at ncovcontact@health.wa.gov.au.
