Helen Hunt Jackson Community Newsletter - OCTOBER
Principal's Message
Parent-Teacher Conference Week is almost here, and our teachers are so excited to meet with you to talk all about your child! Parent-Teacher conferences are critical to the home-school connection. In addition to academic information, teachers often wish to discuss how your child approaches new challenges, relates to adults, and interacts with peers. Please plan to attend IN-PERSON to collaborate with your child's teacher. Conferences will be held Monday, October 10th – Friday, October 14th. The entire week - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - is comprised of MODIFIED DAYS (8:50 -12:55 for TK-5 / 8:30 - 12:30 for Preschool). Please plan accordingly!
Here is a sneak peek at this month:
10/5: PTA Wednesday Movie
10/5: Jamba Juice Wednesdays Begin (every Wed. after school - $3.00)
10/10-10/14: Parent-Teacher Conference Week (Modified Days)
10/10: Preschool Picture Day & TK-5 Make-Up Pictures
10/11: Restaurant Night at Da Coconut Cafe
10/12: Walk & Roll to School Day
10/19: Fall Festival (5-8PM)
10/24-10/28: Red Ribbon Week
10/31: Storybook Character Dress-Up Day (parade at 11:00AM - families welcome!)
11/1: NO SCHOOL (Staff Development Day)
I encourage you to join and get involved with our PTA! Jackson's PTA has already hosted a Family Dance and Book Fair, as well as reinstated our Coyote Fit Club. We want to thank our PTA for "chalking the walk" for Because Nice Matters Week too. What fun to come to school with such cheery, positive messages! Next up: Fall Festival and Red Ribbon Week!

"Thriver" Trait: Self-Confidence
Each month, we will be focusing on a different character trait from the book Thrivers by Michele Borba. In her book, Borba explains the difference between "strivers" and "thrivers." Many of today's students are striving to accomplish and achieve but failing to thrive and be happy. Borba's seven "thrivers" traits are self-confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism. Through instilling these traits in our students, we hope they will be able to thrive both here at school and in life.
This month's school-wide character trait focus is "Self-Confidence." Did you know self-confidence leads to better academic performance, more resilience, a greater sense of well-being, and more happiness? We are working with our Coyotes to understand who they are as individuals and recognize their own strengths. Michele Borba writes in Thrivers, "Real self-confidence is an outcome of doing well, facing obstacles, creating solutions, and snapping back on your own." It is important that we allow children to make mistakes, fail sometimes, and rebound on their own. In the education world, we call this a "productive struggle." You can help at home by allowing your children to fix their own problems and do their own tasks.
Because Nice Matters Week/Bully Prevention
1. STOP - Your child should use their words to say a firm "Stop!" to anyone that is doing something they don't like.
2. WALK - Your child needs to walk away from the problem behavior.
3. TALK - If the problem is not resolved, talk to an adult. Ask your child - "Who can you talk to if you have a problem?" Hopefully they feel comfortable with plenty of grown-ups on campus.
