Second Grade News
Upcoming Dates and A Look at Next Week
Our Short and Sweet Week!
ELA:
Today we were introduced to our vocabulary words for our new story: Scarcity. We will be reading, and doing activities for this story next week, as this was a brief week.
Amazing words: extraordinary, producer, consumer, fiber, strand, lack, typical, decision.
Story Vocabulary: hurricanes, resources, scarcity, scarce, trade-offs.
Writing: We did a couple of writing assignments the last couple of days. The first was brainstorming goals we have for 2020! The kids came up with some great ideas, and did a nice job with this assignment. Our second writing project was a "how to" piece, about How to Catch a Snowflake. We will be focusing a great deal on writing this next half of the year, as we prepare for Third Grade. Some of the children are still struggling with being able to write longer pieces of work, so we will keep at it! You can help at home as well by encouraging your child to keep a journal and free write stories, etc. The more they practice, the better they will get and build their writing stamina!
Social Studies: We played a game today to decide if certain occupations provide consumers with a "good" or a "service".
I spoke to the class about our Market Day project today. I discussed with them that this weekend they should be brainstorming ideas of a good they can make and "sell" to other students. Please help guide them with this decision. I instructed them that whatever product they decide on, should be easy enough for them to make several of them, it needs to be made out of materials we can easily find at school (paper, paint, card stock, yarn, string, etc.)
Your child does not have to do anything further at this point. Just come up with an idea of what they want to make. They will be discussing it with me next week, so no need to write anything down! I look forward to hearing their ideas and creativity.
Math: Yesterday we took a "pre-assessment" on coins. This is not for a grade. It is merely a tool for me to see what they have learned and remember from last year about coins, before we begin our money unit.
Our Reading, Social Studies, and Math units are all tying into one another the next few weeks, as we learn about economy and all that goes along with it!
