I AM. YOU ARE. WE ARE. BULLDOGS!

News from Mrs. Mankin
Kindergarten - Mrs. Robinson These readers listened to an "old favorite," Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students learned that when they read, using voices to match the characters helps bring them and the story "to life." | 1st Grade - Mrs. Hower These mathematicians worked to develop their number sense by working with a partner to "Roll to 50." This game allows students to practice moving forward and backward on a number line while using academic vocabulary. | 2nd Grade - Mrs. Shoemaker Students read a book about "bucket filling." This is when you share specific praise with others, causing their "bucket" to fill. As students are learning about each other and building community, they write notes to each other to highlight classmate's strengths. |

We have had a week filled with all kinds of learning! Teachers are continuing with predictable routines to help students build stamina for reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Hopefully, your child is adapting to our school day and not as tired as when we started. We have a new literacy resource that the Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation has adopted, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt or HMH. Teachers have been engaged in HMH collaborative professional learning since the start of school. We will be officially launching our use of this resource with students on Monday, August 29. Although our curricular resource has changed, our beliefs about learning/guiding principles have not. Your children will still receive standards-based instruction reflective of our HSE21 model.
Today marks the end of our NWEA assessment window. We will finish any necessary make-up testing by Wednesday. You should receive an individual student report for your child on Thursday or Friday of this week. These results are just one measure to indicate your child's current understanding of reading and math. Teachers will use this information to create responsive instruction to help each student learn and grow. If you have any questions about your student's results, please contact his/her teacher.
Families are such an important part of our school learning community! If you plan to volunteer in class or in the library, you must have a current background check on file. To apply for a background check, please use the following link:
Visiting and Volunteering - HSE Background Check Information
Per our HSE Operations Plan, we are not currently allowing visitors at lunch. This decision will be reviewed within the next few weeks. I will share any updates when we have new information.
If you have a student at New Britton, you are automatically a part of our PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization). This group does many things to support students and teachers at NBE. Be sure to review the dates below to see how you can get involved, both as a volunteer and through connecting with other families at events like Dine to Donate and our upcoming Bulldog Pancake Breakfast on Sept. 10 (tickets can be purchased at the door). As always, thank you for partnering with us in education!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin
3rd Grade Recess Recess is a fantastic opportunity to practice social skills and enjoy the beautiful weather. These Bulldogs connected on our Explorer Dome. | 4th Grade - Mrs. Clark 4th grade students are wrapping up the novel Tiger Rising. These readers were engaged in conversation about the story as they worked on their written summaries. Oral rehearsal is a great strategy to use before writing. | Physical Education - Mr. Couto These 1st grade students engaged in team-based physical activity in which math was incorporated: roll the dice and find your number as a team. Connections solidify learning! |

Snack Attack - Fishers Youth Assistance Program
NBE is pleased to announce the return of the Snack Attack program for those students in need. This program, supported by the Fishers Youth Assistance Program, is designed to provide students a little extra nourishment for the weekend until they can receive a hot meal at school on Monday.
Here's how the program works. Your student will pick up a small sack of food to be taken home over the weekend. The sack is filled with individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, fruit cups, pop tarts, peanut butter/crackers, Goldfish crackers, etc. The type of snacks will vary each week. Please let us know if your child has a peanut allergy as he/she will receive a special bag of peanut-free snacks.
There is no cost to you or the school. This program is open to students that qualify for the reduced lunch program or have an increased need currently.
To be part of this free program, you must sign up your family online. https://forms.gle/xrKNaxRaLypSqKvV8
