What is Jazz?

Jazz is a genre, or style, of music that began in the late 1800’s. Jazz is considered the only art form to originate in the US. The genre is made of western style music, african-american style music along with African rhythms. Although jazz originated in America it was also very popular in Europe.

Is Jazz Still Around?

Yes, although it is not as popular as was in the late 1800’s and early to mid 1900’s. Jazz is still performed by some modern artists, like Michael Buble. Roots of jazz are also found in modern music, styles such as R&B, the blues, and virtually in every style of music.


What is in a “Jazz Band”?

The instrumentation, what instruments are present, for jazz can include almost any instrument. popular instruments were, the trumpet,the trombone, the saxophone, the piano, the guitar, and drums. Jazz can be played by small groups, big bands, or even single artists.


What is Improvisation?

Improvisation is very important to jazz music. Improvisation is creating music spontaneously. In early jazz music, the songs were entirely Improvisation, or improv. Small bands would play background chord progressions while a soloist played followed along and created their unique composition, this is why early jazz music was never written down.
