Off to a Great Start!
September 2015
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I can hardly believe we are almost through the second week of the school year! Time flies when you're having fun! We are off to a great start this year. Everyone settled into our daily routines and schedules very quickly and we are already working hard.
In addition to Common Core and NC Essential Standards we are also focusing on how our Mindset impacts us and will be working over the coming weeks to set S.M.A.R.T goals. You will find, below, information for the coming month. The Reading and Science corners explain class expectations and what we will be covering. I have also included a few links on Growth Mindset and SMART goals, important dates, and a few pictures of our first day of Science lab.
I love spending my days with your child! Thank you for sharing them with me!
Love,
Mrs. Craps
Science Corner
We are finishing up our Genetics Unit and will be starting our Ecosystems Unit on September 14. We had a great first two weeks getting settled, and LOVED our first Thursday Science lab extracting DNA from strawberries. Stay tuned for more exciting updates, information and pictures.
Happy, Young Scientists!
Check out the image gallery, below, of our first science lab. We extracted DNA from strawberries!
Reading Corner
We are off to a great start in reading. We are working on what type of thoughts we have as readers, creating "think"marks for ourselves with post-it notes, and have started our first class novel Blood on the River - Jamestown 1607 by Elisa Carbone. So far everyone seems to love it and we have had some very interesting and exciting conversations about life in England in the 17th Century, and whether or not we would have gotten onto a wooden ship to sail into the unknown. In the coming weeks we will continue our novel study, weekly Spelling and Wordly Wise word study, group work, and our class read-aloud The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Please continue to encourage your child to read for a minimum of 30 minutes a night at home. The more we read, the better readers we become!
Classroom "Remind" Texts
Didn't get a chance to register for class texts from the website "Remind" at open house? Scan the QR code, below, or contact me and I will add you to the list for important reminders.
