October is Bullying Prevention Month
It seems as though every month.... almost every DAY... has a "national" label to it. Some are quirky and just a fun way to recognize things we all enjoy or make us laugh (for example, as I am writing this, today is National Grouch Day, I Love Lucy Day, Cheese Curd Day and many other options).
Other monthly themes, like National Bullying Prevention Month, are more serious and deserve our attention. Sometimes the word "BULLY" is thrown around without much regard to what it really means to be bullied. During this month, take some time to talk with your child(ren) about what the true definition of bullying is:
Intentional behavior, which is typically repeated, that hurts, harms or humiliates a student, either physically OR emotionally, and can happen while at school, in the community, or online. Those bullying often have more social or physical "power", while those targeted have difficulty stopping the behavior. - PACER's National bullying prevention center
And beyond that, talk with them about the importance of informing adults when they see it happening. Telling is NOT tattling. Especially when it comes to the topic of bullying!
