Goal Met
The motto this week is: I am a productive team member
This insight focuses on knowing when to lead and when to follow, which is much like knowing when to listen and when to speak. We want our children to become aware of GROUP needs as well as being aware of their own needs within the group because that’s leadership!
Students often misunderstand leadership with being in charge, but great leaders know when to listen and when to let others lead for the good of the group.
Share with your kids how if they are working in a group where EVERYONE is leading ask them to consider "Stepping Down" to give other people a chance to excel. Being able to pass the torch can serve them well in the future. On the flip side, we also want them to see when the group is floundering and learn to "Step Up" and help give the team direction if needed.
You can help your child understand that leadership doesn't always look the same. Sometimes a good leader "Steps Up" and sometimes they "Step Down" the constant is that they do what is best for the team. A good leader puts his or her focus on the whole TEAM rather than on themselves!
One way to help your kids become future leaders is to teach them now, how to be observant and “read the room.” When my kids were young, and we would enter a restaurant, a museum, a ball-park or even a person’s home I would encourage my kids to pay attention to how people act in this environment. I explained that places have group norms and they can differ from one place to another.
Not only did this help them get a sense of what would be appropriate behavior for where we were, but it also gave them confidence because they always knew how to behave. They did not need to depend on me for instructions they could learn and observe all on their own. When we entered new places, like a doctor’s office, etc. and they were too loud I would say:
"Look around and listen. Are you matching the room?"
It's a great tool, but like anything with parenting, it's no magic wand. Parenting isn't easy there are great moments and painful ones. If you are having a tough time, please know you are not alone. There are ups and downs for all of us. We just don't post the downs on Facebook! ;)
Take care and thanks for being a part of our parenting community.
Best to you,
Danna Evans
