Announcements
Happy New Year! I hope all of you enjoyed the long winter break! Thank you so much for the lovely holiday gifts and cards. It was so kind of you to think of me, and I really appreciate your kindness and generosity.
We are jumping right back in to school this week! BizTown is coming up on February 6th, so we will be starting our BizTown curriculum on Tuesday in preparation for our visit. Please be on the lookout for permission slips and parent volunteer information to come home this week.
Academic Updates
Math
We are continuing our unit on Fractions. Before the break, students learned about proper and improper fractions, and how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also spent time working with equivalent fractions and how to simplify fractions. This week, we will start adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
Language Arts
We are currently in the middle of ELA Unit 5. Our focus is on texts that explore the impact technology has had on society. This week, we will be reading about important inventions and advances in technology during the Industrial Revolution. In Writing, students have been working on opinion essays. A primary focus for 5th grade is on how to incorporate and cite evidence from other texts/experts to support an argument when writing an opinion piece.
Science
We will be taking a break from Science for a few weeks while we work on BizTown curriculum.
Social Studies
We will be exploring economics and finances as we prepare for BizTown. Students should also continue learning their 50 states and capitals. Our next States and Capitals test day will be on Friday, January 26.
