Lisbon Elementary's First Annual Pumpkin Book Character Contest is here!
This year Lisbon Elementary families are invited to get into the fall spirit by decorating a pumpkin based on a favorite book character or book series. Pumpkins can be dropped off in the Media Center on Friday, October 25th. The pumpkins will be on display where students and staff members will get a chance to vote for their favorite.
Contest Rules

You may use real or artificial pumpkins and/or gourds of any size and number to create your project.

Absolutely no carved entries. We don't want an entry to rot or spoil!

To decorate you can use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or other craft items on the pumpkin. BE CREATIVE and work as a family.

Projects must represent a book character or a book series.

Projects must be turned in with an entry form, which can be found here.

Bring a copy of the book or a picture of the book cover to display with your entry.

Bring pumpkins to the library between Monday, October 21st through Friday, October 25th.

Winning entries will receive 50 ROAR coupons per student that participated in the creation of the winning entry.

Categories that will be judged are: 1 - Best Representation of a Main Character; 2 - Best Representation of Diversity; 3 - Most Colorful Display; 4 - Best Use of Unique Materials to demonstrate Makerspace; 5 - Best Family Collaboration project that clearly shows a variety of abilities and artistic talents; 6 - Most Unique project

It's time for the Annual Young Authors' Contest for Grades 1-5!
- Students may enter an original short story or poem.
- Entries and cover sheet must be saved as a Word document, with no less than 12 point font using Times New Roman
- All entries must include a completed "Cover Sheet" signed by the student, parent, and teacher.
- Save an electronic copy of the entry and cover sheet. All Lisbon winners will need to submit both electronic copies to amy_olson@hcpss.org
- Student names should be on the cover sheet, not the entry.
- Entries must be the student's original work; however, adults may provide help with editing conventions.
- NO graphics
- Entries of a violent nature will be deemed inappropriate
- Each story may range from a minimum of 2 paragraphs to no more than 3 typed pages
Please have students submit a printed copy of the cover sheet and entry on or before December 2, 2019.
The judging committee will select a First Place and Honorable Mention for each grade. Our First place winners from each grade will judged at the county level then possibly the state level.

TRISTAR MARTIAL ARTS FUNDRAISER
Time is running out! From now through October 19th, Tristar Martial Arts is offering 6 weeks of martial arts lessons for $69, which includes a FREE UNIFORM! 100% of the $69 goes directly to your LES PTA, and classes may be redeemed through December 14, 2019. And ... recipients do not need to be LES students!

COLLECTIONS
We are collecting coats, hats, gloves and boots through November 22nd for Local and HCPSS children and adults. New or like new condition please. They can also be brought to Community Night.
Useable and unusable shoe collection for Stevens Forest ES PTA runs through November 1st. Stevens Forest ES is a Title 1 school located in Columbia.
At Movie Night on December 13th we will be collecting for Homewood School’s Recycled Treasures. Homewood is HCPSS special needs school in Ellicott City. The school does not have its own PTA and relies on the community and other PTAs for support. Each holiday season they have a "store" where students who have earned "cash" credits shop for their loved ones. The items are then wrapped for them by volunteers. All items are donated to Homewood. Last year Lisbon ES delivered a minivan full of items and we hope to surpass it this year! All good condition items are accepted; examples: purses, stuffed animals (MOST POPULAR), beauty products (unopened), housewares, clothes, toys, etc. We will send out more information as the event get closer.
FALL FESTIVAL
Many thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and vendors from our annual Fall Festival.
This year we had 29 raffle baskets. Thanks to the Mullan Family (Flicks), Berson Family, LVFD, and Gentle Giants Horse Rescue for sponsoring baskets, and to everyone and business that donated Items to fill them.
Thanks to the Lisbon staff who volunteered to set up, run activities, and clean up after working all day with our children! Mrs. Anoff, Ms. Wright, Mrs. Hastings , Mrs. Corn, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Petrella, Mrs. Martin, Mr. DiSimone, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Bauer. Special thanks to The Grill @ Lisbon, who donated dinner for each staff person who stayed late to help. Special thanks also go to our night custodians Maxine and Hawa who clean up after every event. Your ROARsome support is very much appreciated!

REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
Lisbon Elementary School students, in all grades, have an opportunity to create original works of art for the PTA’s Reflection Program. Students can submit works of art in one or all of the categories of: visual art, photography, music composition, literature, film production, and dance choreography. Students have an opportunity to be recognized for their artwork at the school, county, state, and national level. If you or your child are interested in the program, all entries must be submitted to the Lisbon Elementary School main office by Friday, November 15.
