Happy Holidays to JBD Families!
The week before the winter holiday vacation is always full of fun and excitement! We know everyone is looking forward to a nice break. JBD has been busy and I have to say a special thank you to the PTA for the beautiful tree in our foyer, the amazing Gull Gift shop, and the Clean the Bay day! All has been enjoyed by everyone.
Best wishes to all for a wonderful break! Remember that Friday, Dec. 21 is an adjusted dismissal day. Take note times and spirit days on the calendar.
Please enjoy family and friends and we will look forward to seeing everyone in 2019!

READING MONTH 2019
January is "Reading Month" at John B. Dey! This year, the whole school will be participating in the "One School, One Book" initiative. Our staff has chosen the wonderful story The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. Throughout the month, each classroom teacher will be reading aloud this book to their class, and we will center our month-long activities around this story. We are looking forward to the fun!
Tides Reading Logs are back! These will come home on January 2. Completed logs will earn the reader game tickets to upcoming Tides' baseball games (one per month). More details can be found on the Tides Log sheet.
Also, we will be collecting books for our Annual Book Swap. What's the Book Swap all about? Every student is encouraged to bring in gently used books from home to swap. Make sure those books are in good condition. The books brought in should match the age of the reader. Bring a book- get a book! The swap will take place during the week of January 28 - February 1, 2019.
Join us in January for the fun! Dey Readers Rock!

GIFTED CORNER
Gifted corner
First Grade Parents:
Your child’s gifted screening score will be available on Parent Portal by December 15, 2018 and you may access it at that time. You can access your child’s Parent Portal account and navigate to the Standardized Test Results to view your child’s gifted screening scores. Getting Parent Portal access is a two-step process so if you’re not on yet, you will want to register now to find out your child’s test scores when they become available. Go to VBSchools.com. Under the word PARENTS on the blue banner, select Parent Portal and follow the directions for registering from the blue box on the left side of the screen.
Because this is a normed test, your child is expected to score 50%. If your child scores 90% or higher, please consider applying for the gifted program. This test only accesses one type of thinking, non-verbal/spatial. If your child demonstrates strengths in other areas, you too may consider putting your child up for gifted identification.
