Wilma Rudolph

A Famous Track Star


Wilma was born on June 23, 1940. She was born in Saint Bethlehem, TN. She only weighed 4.5 pounds. The doctor said that she would probably not survive. When Wilma was young she got polio and pneumonia. Polio is a virus and so is pneumonia. Her mom, brother, and her sister had to massage her legs 4 to five times a day.


Wilma received dozens of awards. She received the James E. Sullivan award and the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. Now there is even an award named after her.
