School Board Approves Fourth District Goal for the 2018-19 Year
"Be responsive to community growth and student learning needs of the future by conducting long-range capital improvements and financial planning through processes and practices that lead to long-term financial stability and sustainability."
The goal signals the Board's desire to explore potential long-range capital improvements as well as the feasibility and need of a future bond.
The Board agreed to again approve the three District Goals from the 2017-18 school year, which continue to serve as guidance and inspiration for West Linn-Wilsonville staff and students.
Bob Carlson Honored for 25-plus Years in the District
CREST, which stands for Center for Research in Environmental Sciences and Technologies, has been a crucial part of the WLWV student experience since the program's creation in 2001. Over the years thousands of students have benefited from science inquiry learning through engaging field experiences, independent student research, gardening, service learning, hands-on inquiry-based learning, and so much more.
The WLWV School Board spent part of Monday night thanking CREST Director Bob Carlson, the person who has served as director since 2001 and who has guided the program for the past 17 years. Mr. Carlson has been with the school district for more than 25 years, starting out as a classroom teacher. He is retiring at the end of October. The Board thanked him for his many years of service, and for his help as CREST transitions with his departure.
"What I've always appreciated about CREST is the number of access points for students and your ability to reach so many of our students in different ways," said Director Regan Molatore. "Your passion and your work with our schools and students has made its mark on my kids and my family, so thank you for all that you've done."
Mr. Carlson shared some of his favorite memories from his time at CREST, adding that he's looking forward to seeing how the program continues to grow into the future.
"My passion is working with kids outside in nature and getting them excited about science," Carlson said. "I've always really focused on the district mission question with CREST, and in particular the part that reads 'for the world.' How does environmental sustainability help our community, our local environment, our watersheds? How do our actions affect the world? That's always been something that I've emphasized and hoped our students come away with."
Mr. Carlson will be recognized at CREST's upcoming Fall Festival scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.; 7151 Boeckman Road, Wilsonville.
Board Approves Resolution Certifying WWEA Contract Ratification
WWEA President Lane Johnson shared his appreciation for the bargaining process. The Board thanked Mr. Johnson as well as all WLWV teachers throughout the district.
District Recognizes Teacher Mentors; Unified Sports Ambassadors
Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Jennifer Spencer-Iiams introduced Wilsonville High School Unified Sports All-Star Delegates Kendall Taylor and Jose Flores Chavez. The pair of students were selected to represent Oregon at the 2018 Major League Soccer All Star Game in Atlanta. The two Unified Athletes met other athletes from around the country, met professional soccer players, and played in a soccer game with other high school students that aired on ESPN.
