SENIOR SHOWCASE!

High School, College, and Beyond
Mrs. Porter's BHM Chairs,
This exhibit was the result of our study of Shirley Chisholm, a Congresswoman who was not willing to sit on the sidelines of government. The exhibit shares how Congresswoman Chisholm stepped up, claimed her seat at the table of public discourse, and made a difference by representing a wide range of people and issues. Our class created our own “seats at the table” concerning important issues where we would like our voices to be heard.
Student's thoughts about the project...
“MY favorite part of the project was getting to put together multiple perspectives and form them into one to make the design of our chair. “ Chloe Sigler
“My favorite part of this project was seeing all of the different art majors and other majors come together and create a piece of meaningful art. We took the chance to dive in and take a deep look at history. ”
- Aysia Walker
“The message I presented was Black Lives Matter because it is important to know that black people have been treated poorly for years and it needs to stop. My favorite part of this project was using the hot glue gun. I learned that not everyone has to believe in you for you to achieve your goal if you really want it. I thought this was a fun, messy project.”
- King Lavender
“The message we presented was that black lives matter, and we need to find peace. I thought our best part was the African American heritage flag that we drew and placed on the chair. I learned that Shirley’s “Unbought and unbossed” statement lives strong today.”
- Reginae Talton
“My group wanted people to know that Shirley was very passionate about what she believed in. She wanted change and the world and fought for it. May favorite part was putting our ideas together on the chairs and seeing the results.”
- Mariya McMillon
“We presented Shirley’s overall life. From her greatest achievements down to her many obstacles. I enjoyed assembling the chair. I’m not a great with words or writing overall and am better at showing ideas through imagery and this project let me do that.”
- Lennon Peterson

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Cleveland Institute of Art student Derek Walker discovers his voice as a painter
Some of Derek Walker’s earliest memories include learning how to draw from his father and cousin. Walker loved to draw cars, particularly Lamborghinis, as a boy.
Today the Cleveland of Institute of Art senior is establishing his voice as an artist in Cleveland with his paintings featuring hometown images and iconography.
Walker is a graduate of the Cleveland School of the Arts and received a unique opportunity when the school moved into its new building.
“My class of students were one of the first students to actually enroll into the building, because it was newly built and they wanted to make the school a bit more welcoming to the students,” Walker said. “So, they invited several artists of the school to create murals on all of the blank walls.”
