Kindergarten Information
Having a child start school for the first time can feel overwhelming for you and your child.
These are the basics of what you can expect for starting your child’s school career.
At what age do kids start kindergarten?
- Per Nebo school district and state law, Kindergarteners must be five years old before September 2 of the school year.
- Nebo School District Policy
Please refer to our registration section on the Riverview Elementary Website for when and how to register your kindergartener or go to the Nebo School District Website.
Each kindergartener will undergo a simple evaluation to prepare their teacher for where they will be starting the school year. Your teacher will schedule this evaluation with you, after registration and before the first day of kindergarten.
We will also host an open house where you and your child can get familiarized with the school. The date of the open house will be posted on the website and in the principal's newsletter. Newsletter Sign Up Form.
Riverview does both morning and afternoon kindergarten. While we cannot guarantee that your child will be placed in the preferred time slot, we will try to accommodate your requests. Please call the office to request an AM or PM time, and you will need your application number in order for them to look up your registration and assign you a class. The application number is located on the top right side of the Infant Campus Online Registration.
Kindergarteners can be picked up and dropped off by the “Bikes/West Parking Lot,” as seen on the site map. If your child is late for school, please use the front door by the office.
Please refer to the school’s homepage for the schedule for both AM and PM kindergarten.
First Day of School
- An active brain! We will provide all basic supplies and activities to your student. We ask that a $25.00 contribution be made to help with field trips, assemblies, and classroom needs. If you are unable to pay this amount, any amount is appreciated. All students will be allowed to participate in all activities. The donation can be made easily through the infinite campus parent portal.
- School drop-off on the first day can be a little confusing. Especially when finding a new classroom. The school open house held before the first day is an excellent opportunity to help familiarize your student with finding their class. Students will have an area to line up before the bell rings, including kindergarten. Amend the map.
- This is the time to talk and have a family plan on how your children are getting home from school. Please take the time to show your child where they will be picked up and by whom. If walking and/or riding bikes, it's vital to discuss where to meet siblings if they are going home together and which route to take when going home. Having the same pick-up spot and going home routine is very beneficial for students and the office, and it helps and cuts down on the number of students wanting to call home after school.
Pick-up and Drop-off Safty Route:
- Please review the site map for pick-up and drop-off areas. Please let your child know that the only safe way to cross a street is with the assistance of the crossing guard and to follow our school safety route. Riverview Safe Pick-up and Dismal Map
Bus Routes:
- Please refer to the district's Bus Route Finder to see if your child is eligible for the bus program.
Free and Reduced Lunch Program: Who qualifies for the free lunch program?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will continue reimbursing schools and childcare centers for free meals to all students regardless of their income through the 2021-22 school year.
- In the future, you can apply for the free and reduced lunch program through The Infinite Campus Parent Portal. In the main menu, select "More"> "Meal Benefit."

Curriculum Information and Assessments
Reading Program
Starting the 2021 school year, parents will see less focus on guided reading levels, memorizing sight words, and sounding out words one letter at a time. Rather, teachers are integrating a research-based program called LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). Teachers will be instructing reading whole class and in small groups with a focus on a skill the student needs. The focus may be phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, accuracy, comprehension, writing, and language. Through effective teaching instruction, students will better know how to pronounce the different types of syllables, how to predict what sound a vowel will make, and hand gestures to help identify patterns within words.
Parents will see their students are able to do more problem-solving in their reading. They're going to be able to use the patterns that they have learned in the classroom when they sit down to read at home. They can break words apart and sound them out and they will be able to do that on their own.
Our goal is to become proficient in the area of literacy for the purposes of reaching their individual potential and becoming successful readers in and out of the classroom.
