Prison Reform
By: Trey Mastio
When, Where, and How did it start?
It started in the 1830's in Massachusetts. Dorthea Dix started the reform process because she went to teach at a prison and saw that the autistic and insane were confined in this Commonwealth in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, pens! Chained, beaten with rods, lashed into obedience.
2 Things they did well and 2 Things they could have done better
Got hospitals and places for the insane and others to go to instead of prison. Helped teach the insane and others what to do and how to read/write.
They could have not taken any prisoners out and just the mentaly disabled. They could have changed the prisons to were they were not torturing anyone.
People who helped support prison reform
Dorthea Dix - Her efforts on behalf of the mentally ill and prisoners helped create dozens of new institutions across the United States and in Europe and changed people’s perceptions of these populations.
Philippe Pinel - takes over the Bicêtre insane asylum and forbids the use of chains and shackles. He removes patients from dungeons, provides them with sunny rooms, and also allows them to exercise on the grounds. How my reform is helping today
They are not so cruel now in prisons because of it.
