PANTHER PROGRESS
January 2022 Issue 5
MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Lincoln Family -
As we welcome a new year, 2022 continues to deliver unique challenges in education as we navigate the pandemic. Our phenomenal school staff continues to endorse and reinforce the safety guidelines and protocols established by the partnership between FCPS and the Frederick County Health Department. We ask that families do the same outside of school to keep your own child healthy, along with the other 622 students that your child(ren) will interact with here at school. TOGETHER, we need to keep students accessing in-person learning as much as possible, as safely as possible.
In a new year, many people make resolutions. Did you know that 9 out of 10 people fail their resolutions and 50% of resolution makers will fail by the end of January? Whether you're a believer of resolutions or not, we challenge you to find one word that stays with you; that drives you. No resolutions, just one word that gives you meaning, mission, passion, and purpose. One word that will help you be your best. This is a great exercise to do with your child(ren) as well. We would love to hear the word that your student selects!
Mrs. Smith's word is "resilience," as we continue to be resilient during these times of schooling. My word is "serve," as I strive to serve not only your child and our Lincoln commUNITY as they attend Lincoln ES, but to also serve our incredible staff that work so hard so that they too, can serve your child(ren) with growing them both academically and socially. In your SERVICE, with RESILIENCE.
Much Lincoln Love!
Eric Rhodes - Principal
Mary Beth Smith - Assistant Principal
FCPS WINTER WEATHER GUIDE: HOW TO STAY INFORMED WHEN ICE & SNOW ARRIVE
Snow Day or Virtual Day?
If inclement weather prompts FCPS to close, it will be a traditional snow day and a virtual option will not be used. While FCPS utilized virtual learning during the early stages of the global health crisis, this year we will work toward instituting systemwide virtual learning and evaluate the viability of a virtual option for inclement weather days if all available inclement weather days are used.
How does FCPS decide whether to close or delay schools?
The top priority for FCPS is the safety of students and staff. When inclement weather is in the forecast, FCPS relies on weather forecasts from meteorologists. Sometimes, it is obvious inclement weather will affect our community. In those situations, FCPS may choose to announce a closure or delay the night before. Weather can often be unpredictable, which means decisions must be made early in the morning. FCPS Transportation Office employees will travel on roads throughout the county and assess school parking lot conditions.
Based on the available information the team collects, the final decision on inclement weather closures and delays is made. FCPS strives to make this decision before 5 a.m.
How can the community find out about inclement weather decisions?
The FCPS Office of Public Affairs swiftly communicates inclement weather decisions as soon as they are made using a variety of communications tools:
- FCPS social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
- FCPS.org
- FCPS Find Out First text messages and emails
- FCPS Cable Channel 18
Local and regional media are also alerted.
What are the fastest ways to find out about inclement weather closures?
Our FCPS Maryland social media channels are usually the first to have updates about closures and delays. FCPS.org and FCPS Cable Channel 18 are also quickly updated. It can take up to 30 minutes for FCPS to alert our media partners and for a FindOutFirst message to get published.
We encourage families to sign up for text message alerts via Find Out First. Text messages are only sent in case of an emergency or in case of inclement weather closure or delay notifications. To sign up for text messages, visit www.fcps.org/fof, log in, and add a cell phone number in the profile. Text messages are distributed faster than email messages.
LINCOLN'S SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT: TOGETHER WE CAN!
At Lincoln Elementary School, we engage in an ongoing process to address student achievement needs. The School Improvement Process (SIP) Team meets regularly in order to strategically prioritize needs, establish measurable improvement goals, and identify action steps that will make the most impact on student achievement.
Check out our parent hot sheet to understand how you can support your child(ren) and our school improvement: Parent Hot Sheet
This hot sheet will be sent home in Thursday folders on 1/13/2022 and can also be found on our schools website: https://education.fcps.org/lnes/node/721

The team works closely with students, staff, and families, to grow a learning community where all members are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged to be their best self. The three major areas of focus at Lincoln are:
Teaching and practicing emotional awareness and emotional regulation.
Developing and maintaining healthy relationships, which includes the use of restorative practices to help all members learn to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts in a positive and productive manner.
Instructing students, staff, and families about the role of the brain in learning in order to increase student independence and academic stamina.
This website has multiple resources for students and families. It also has videotaped lessons we use with students and parent videos that explain our emotional regulation program.
January Updates
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: At Lincoln, we are working together to help students develop skills for life. Social responsibility is about learning how to understand and work with others in safe and healthy ways.
Part of Social Responsibility is learning how to cooperate with others. You can click HERE to go to the page of the counselor website with videos we created about being a leader, and learning skills for cooperation in many different areas of school and life.
Cooperation is:
Working together toward the same goal
The actions of someone who is being helpful by doing what is needed or asked for
La cooperación es:
Trabajando juntos hacia el mismo objetivo
las acciones de alguien que está ayudando al hacer lo que se necesita o se pide

You will be provided a weekly communication reminder of this requirement. Students who are ill or are experiencing any of the symptoms or situations listed below are expected to remain at home.
Parents/Guardians are affirming and attesting to the following for their student:
