Happy New Year

It was lovely to welcome all the children and families back into school this week. Everyone came back keen and ready to learn (if not a little sleepy from the earlier starts!). We hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Christmas and would like to wish everyone in the school community health and happiness for 2016. We have an exciting term ahead and look forward to working with you all to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment for the children.

Christmas - The Mexican way

This week Year 5 kick started their learning journey 'Why go to Mexico?' by exploring Mexican Christmas traditions. Wednesday was Epiphany, the time when the three kings brought presents to the baby Jesus. In Spanish speaking countries this is celebrated as the three kings day and in some parts of the world is the day when children are bought presents. To mark this special day, the year 5 children wrote letters in Spanish telling the three kings what they would like for Christmas and then they placed the letters inside a balloon, just as the children in Mexico would do. Mexican children would then release the balloons at one of the many parades that take place, year 5 had to make do with the hall! The children had great fun carrying out this activity as you can see from the photo above.

Holiday and Training Dates 2016 - 2017

The holiday and training dates for 2016 - 2017 have now been agreed and we have emailed them to all parents. In addition, a schedule of these dates can be found by clicking on the button below, and they have also been placed in the letters section on our website for future reference. If you require a paper copy, these are available from the leaflet dispenser in the school reception area.

Trips and Visits

As you are aware, we pride ourselves on the breadth of educational visits we offer our children throughout school. All the visits rely on the voluntary contributions of parents or carers, without which the visits would be unable to take place. This year, in an attempt to give you advanced notice and to help with financial planning, we advised each class of the cost of all the visits for the academic year. This amount has been input onto Parentpay to enable you to make payments in regular small amounts if you choose to do so.

As a term has now passed, please could we remind parents of this arrangement and ask you to check that you are on target to make payment of the annual amount by the end of the academic year. When we run a trip we obviously incur expenses and it would help us greatly if payments could be made in line with the trips.

We really do appreciate your support as without it, we would be unable to carry out some of the valuable learning experiences.

Milk

A letter has been issued to all parents today regarding roll out of the milk scheme across the whole school. This initiative is part of the Government’s new School Food Plan legislation and implementation is being supported by Coolmilk. Drinking a portion of milk at mid-morning break offers protein, calcium and other vital nutrients, which are important for children’s growth and development. It can also be a sensible way to bridge the gap between breakfast and lunch. To find out the top ten reasons for drinking milk click on the button below.

Welcome Back

This week the children were pleased to welcome back Miss Calvert to school. Miss Calvert, who left us last year, will be returning to school on a part time basis and offer occasional cover teaching for years 4, 5 and 6. Mr Dudman said 'Miss Calvert is an excellent teacher and a specialist in science; I am delighted she has come back to join the team'.

Lister House

The PTA were tirelessly selling hyacinths before Christmas to raise money for school funds - we know many of you will have purchased them and enjoyed them over Christmas! They did a fantastic job of selling a huge quantity and the few they had remaining, they donated to Lister House in Ripon, so that the residents and staff could enjoy them at their best. The PTA have received the following letter and on behalf of the school we would also like to add our thanks to them for helping to strengthen and promote our links with the local community.
