Book Award Winners for Fork Shoals!
Book of the Week: Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave by Laban Carrick Hill and Bryan Collier
Dave the Potter, a Caldecott Honor Book, Coretta Scott King Award winner, and nominee for the 2012-13 South Carolina Picture Book Award, is truly an astounding read. It tells the story of Dave, a slave in South Carolina, who made wonderful works of art and inscribed his beautiful pots with verses that told quite a bit about his life.
This book shows readers, both young and old, the power of art. Couple that with a few simple but evocative words, and readers are left with a story that will move and inspire them.
This book is perfect for students interested in art and those learning about slavery in America. It is a quick, engaging read that will make even the youngest readers think about how they can express themselves--and maybe even make a difference--through art.
Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars
To complete the program, students must read 5 books during the designated 5-week time period. If the students reach their reading goal, they will qualify as a 2013 Greenville Drive Reading All-Star.
The reading program will run for 5 weeks: Wednesday, February 6th until Wednesday, March 13th. Students who complete the program will be honored at Fluor Field before the 7:00 PM Drive game on Monday, April 15th.
Each student who succeeds in reading the designated number of books will be honored at the Monday, April 15th Greenville Drive Celebration Game. The student will receive free admission, recognition on the DriveVision, a parade around the outfield warning track, a chance to throw the First Pitch, and a Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars T-shirt.

Black History Month
As an IB World School, we want to promote diversity, open-mindedness, and keep our kids thinking, researching, and inquiring. Our Social Studies Committee has come up with a plan to celebrate Black History Month. Teachers will send a link with questions, and they will also be available on the school website. Feel free to research the answers with your student. Students that provide a correct answer to any of the questions will be in the drawing for some fun-tastic prizes. Multiple names will be pulled each Friday during the month of February on the morning news! Good luck!
Pennies for Patients
Pennies for Patients starts February 4th and runs until February 28th. Students may bring in money to go towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
