LEOPARDS Leaping Into Action! Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts
Character education and social-emotional learning are important components of teaching the whole child. At Elsa England we embrace the Capturing Kids Hearts philosophy, and we focus on the key character traits of loyalty, empathy, open-mindedness, perseverance, appreciation, resourcefulness, disciplined, and service. As you know our state has been massively impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our fellow Texans need both immediate relief and long-term help as whole communities face the daunting task of rebuilding after historic losses related to this natural disaster.
England TAG students are currently creating eBooks to share with students in affected areas. Our 2nd graders will be developing a service project as part of their Project Based Learning unit on the real-world problem of weather disasters. Our England Student Council will also be leading service projects as they begin meeting this year. We also have plans to adopt a school once those needs have been determined.
Our immediate campus response is to support the Austin Relief Network by creating Welcome Kits for evacuees who are currently being moved to the Austin area. Approximately 6,000 kits are needed. Elsa England would like to contribute to this effort by donating 50 kits (one kit per classroom).
We need parent support to make this happen. Your students will be collecting the following items to build the kits for their class donation. If your family chooses to participate, please contact your child's teacher to sign up for an item to donate. All items should be delivered to the classroom teacher by September 7th. Delivery date is September 8th!
Each kit contains the following items:
- Large plastic tub with lid
- One small pillow
- One light, thin blanket
- Shampoo
- Soap
- Toothpaste
- Package of toothbrushes
- Comb
- Brush
- Deodorant
- 2 wash cloths
- 2 towels
