Read Across America Week!

To celebrate Read Across America Week, 3K has participated in many Dr. Seuss inspired activities, as well as reading inspired activities!

Monday: On Monday, we practiced our reading strategy to visualize while we read. As a class, we discussed how this is an important skill, because when texts get complicated it will help your comprehension to be able to make a picture in your mind. To practice this skill, we read If I Ran The Circus by Dr. Seuss. The catch was that I didn't show them any of the pictures. When we finished reading the story, each student was assigned to use the text to visualize and illustrate 1-2 pages of the text. We were amazed to see how close our visualizations came to Dr. Seuss' actual illustrations!

Tuesday: On Tuesday, we integrated Dr. Seuss' great stories into math! We read And To Think I Saw It On Mulbery Street. The story was about a little boy's imagination and all of the great things he visualized from his walk home from school. We used our knowledge of fractions to create a number line from Tatem to home. Students then drew a picture of something they would like to see on their walk home, and they then plotted it on a point on the number line and wrote the correct fraction. Students even went above and beyond by writing equivalent fractions on our number line!

Wednesday: On Wednesday, Tatem School had their annual Hallway Read! The entire school dropped everything that they were doing on Wednesday afternoon to grab a good book and read in the hallway! By having everyone in our school read, it shows how important reading is and how fun reading can be!

Friday: To wrap up our Read Across America Week, 3K readers had a special afternoon of comfy, cozy reading. Students had the opportunity to wear their pajamas, bring in a stuffed animal, and bring in a favorite book or two! 3K readers loved having the afternoon to become engrossed in their books and fall into another world.
